IE6 doesnot call Adobe to display a PDF

Hi all,
we are using IE6.0.2800.1106 SP1 as browser to open up a
application using Java Applet (front end is Oracle's
forms6i, using JInitiator 1.1.8.19). This application
starts fine. When we are trying to display a PDF file as a
report, we donot see a output. In normal operation, a PDF
file is generated at the server and IE opens up a new
browser window and displays the PDF file inside browser.
This is working for more than 50 PCs here. Even Netscape
navigator works fine.
However, 2 PCs on windows2000 SP4(5.00.2195) are unable to
call Adobe to display the report. I have tried and made
the property of all items in IE same as other machines,
even de-installed IE6, tried with IE5, didnot help. It
just quits when it is about to call PDF file. We see that
the the process did generate the PDF file on server, but
IE didnot open it automatically, i.e. it didnot try to
download it on local PC. If we type the path of the PDF in
browser and try to run it manually, it runs fine.
(http://199.82.186.227/dev60temp/s6gd_1.PDF is a typical
path).
I couldnot find a place in IE where we can specify that if
a PDF file is to be displayed, open it in Adobe.
Does anyone has idea whats going on here?

Thanks in advance,
Abhi.

Check the Properties of Adobe Reader on the non-responsive workstations. Launch Adobe, click on File | Preferences | General. Compare these settings to other workstations.

I'd suspect some settings in the Options section, such as, "Allow File Open Links" and/or "Web Browser Integration" need to be enabled.

Another guess would be a corrupted plug-in for IE. If suspect, uninstall/reinstall the Adobe Reader.

Eric,
Thanks for response. I had already tried that. Didnot
help. In fact, I just wanted to rule out Adobe as a
problem, so I de-installed Adobe in one of the not-working
machine and one working machine. When I try to run report
(open/download the PDF file) on the working machine, it
pops-up a message saying the filename, filetype and from
(server IP), and asks if I want to open the file from
current location or save to local PC.
On erring PC, it never pop-up any message. So, looks like,
IE didnot even try to open/download that file.
Any answers would be appreciated a lot.

Thanks,
Abhi.

Sorry, but I'm stumped...it sure sounds like a basic file association problem, but I still suspect the IE plug-in.

Adobe has some tech articles on configuring the browser and trouble shooting steps (OS peculiar). Here's a link to their support article listing:

Hopefully, they will shed some light on the problem.

Supplemental follow-up:

Here's an after-lunch afterthought: Since these are ActiveX plugins, be sure that the Security settings in IE are enabled, especially "Run ActiveX controls and plug-ins".
