Ever since I installed Office 2003, IE6 will not open
when I click a hyperlink in any program (Office or not)
except Outlook 2003 unless I already have an IE6 window
open. Any suggestions? Thanks.

From http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/nolinks.htm

Open Windows Explorer.
Go to Tools | Folder Options | File Types.
Scroll down to URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol and select it.
Click Edit or Advanced, depending on your Windows version.
Select 'open'.
Click Edit.

"Application used to perform this action" should read:

"C:\PROGRAM FILES\INTERNET EXPLORER\iexplore.exe" -nohome
(Check the path to iexplore.exe to make sure that is correct and use the
double quotes.)

DDE should be checked and in the boxes below it you should have:

#1:
"%1",,-1,0,,,,
#2
IExplore
#3 (blank)

#4
WWW_OpenURL

URL:HyperText Transfer Protocol with Privacy should be the same.

Sometimes it is necessary to uncheck Use DDE.

If that doesn't fix it, go to Start | Run and type

regsvr32 urlmon.dll

Frank,
Thanks for your prompt reply. I am sorry to be so slow
to respond. I tried exactly what you describe below,
with and without DDE checked, but with no success. I
also ran regsvr32 urlmon.dll, which executed
successfully. Again no success in starting IE6.
To be more specific, I have Windows XP. If I click on
Windows Update in the Start menu, IE6 does not start. If
I click on a hyperlink in Word (or any other Office 2003
program except Outlook), I receive the error message, "An
unexpected error has occurred". All this is true, if no
other IE6 window is open. If one is, then everything
works fine, with a NEW IE6 window openning an loading the
desired URL.
I would appreciate any additional suggestions you may
have. Thanks.

Note that AdAware and SpyBot S & D will each catch some things the other
won't. Also, each need to be updated before every use, even when just
downloaded. There's also a lot more to do than just those two programs.

If trying everything at that site does not fix the problem please post back
in the same thread.

Frank,
Thanks for your continued advice. Sorry for the
incomplete message that I accidently just posted.

I ran AdAware and SpyBot. Only the latter found any
suspicious files and registry entries. Even though they
looked harmless to me, I deleted all but the C_Dilla
folder, which contains a single SafeCast data file. I am
uncertain what the impact of eliminating this folder and
file would be. By the way, SafeCast appears to have
other files on my computer, which could be uninstalled.
I then ran HiJackThis. Although many items were
identified, none seemed suspicious to me. In particular,
I looked up every O2 and O4 entry. All were legitimate.

My problem persists. More advice, please.

Go to http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/ , and download Hijack This.

Unzip, doubleclick HijackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save

Press that, and save the log somewhere.

NOTE: Most of what Hijack This lists will be harmless, or even required, so
do NOT fix anything
