A windows update ran automatically the other day.
Since then I have been unable to use Internet Explorer. The browser opens
but will not connect to any site.
All other programs work, ie: Firefox, mail, google earth, iTunes(store).
Needless to say, when on the Microsoft website trying to do an update or
download I am informed that Internet Explorer is required !!
I have run my (up to date) anti-virus software, AdAware, Hijack This as well
as the Microsoft Anti Spyware, as well as PcCillin House Call- nothing has
been found.
Many re-boots later and ie6 remains dead.
Now What ?

I would suggest going to Control Panel -> Add/Remove Programs -> Add/Remove
Windows Components
Once there, deselect Internet Explorer and then follow the steps to apply
this. After that, reboot your computer (just to make sure, kind of as a
precaution). Then go back to Add/Remove Windows Components and reselect
Internet Explorer and follow the steps to apply it. Following these steps is
basically reinstalling IE. After doing this go to WindowsUpdate to get any
service packs, security updates, etc. that were created since you first got
Windows. Also, make sure you do a virusscan to make sure the problem was not
caused by some type of virus. Hopefully these steps will fix your problem.
Good Luck!

Nope, tried that already !

Reformat hard disk and reinstall windows, should be fine:-)

Another idea before you do that, go into the (new to service pack 2)
Tools->Options->Programs->Manage Add-Ons button and see if there are any
add-ons you don't want there that might be conflicting (including -- get rid
of any msn/aol/yahoo/google toolbars for now, reinstall them later when you
know you're working).

Have you rebooted yet? This happened to me on all browsers, Turns
out it disabled DNS in the browers
I was able to ping a site by name, and then use the returned IP
address in a browser to see the site.

After rebooting, it worked again.

Ahh...Windows
Well i tried once again to uninstall ie6, reboot, reinstall ie6 reboot and
do windows update.
Of course ie6 opens to do the update, but it is stone dead, leaving me to
look at white screen with the windows logo doing it's "connecting" thing in
the top right corner - and goes nowhere.
I spoke to the guys at Microsoft on Friday and after about an hour on the
phone and unable to resolve the issue.
I was then informed that should I require further assistance, as this is an
OEM version I would have to pay them in the region of $50 for further support
on this problem !
Here I have to add, Apple have never charged me for support on their OS
regardless of where I purchased my iBook.
I understand the logic and business decisions regarding OEM versions and
support, but, some problems may extend beyond the abilities of the tech guys
at the pc manufacturer and this is where I feel Microsoft is obliged to step
up to the plate !

From http://www.fjsmjs.com/OE/nolinks.htm

1. Click Start, and then click Run.

2. In the Open box, type:

regsvr32 urlmon.dll

3. Click OK, and then click OK again when you receive the following message:

DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded.

4. If you are using WinXP try this:
http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/reg/IE_Default_Browser.reg

5. See Internet Explorer 6.0 Service Pack 1 may display a blank Web page
after you select Auto-Select encoding
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/870863

You can also try this:

Go to Start/run, and type SFC (msconfig for WinXP).
Choose 'Extract One File From Installation Disk' ("Expand File" for WinXP).
Type oleaut32.dll, not worrying about its location. Then, click Start.

Next to 'Restore From', type in or browse for the file's location, which is
probably in the Win98 (i386 for WinXP) folder of your installation CD-ROM
(typically D:\Win98), or in your Windows\Options\Cabs (Windows\i386 for
WinXP) folder, as the case may be.

Then, next to 'Save File In', enter C:\Windows\System (C:\Windows\System32
for WinXP), and click OK. System File Checker (or msconfig) looks for the
file, saves it as you requested, and then tells you that 'the file has been
successfully extracted'.

You may need to reboot.

Nope, tried those suggestions, all seemed to go smoothly, rebooted, opened
ie6 - no change at all.

You can get a stronger repair subset (closer to the old IE Repair
ref. KB194177) from the regsvr32 commands listed in KB831429

You still haven't actually disclosed your OS and maintenance level
but one interpretation of your reply to RobertW would be that you
have XPsp2. In that case you could try modifying ieuinit.inf
as I have described elsewhere and then using XPsp2's pseudo
IE repair (iexplore.exe /rereg) The command still works without
the modifications it just terminates prematurely and I suspect doesn't
even do as much as the KB831429 repair procedure. YMMV.

BTW if your OS is XPsp2 I'm curious to know what you did
to uninstall and reinstall IE6 (re your latest reply to Doug Warner)
because it really isn't possible (at least not conventionally).
E.g. if you used the procedure described by your first responder
(Nathan Sokalski) I suspect all that you accomplished was to disable
and re-enable IE Desktop and Start menu shortcuts. <eg>
