Hi

Am currently getting quite a lot of crashes with IE6 (XP SP2) at some random
times and when IE is closed. The error message is as follows
The instruction at "0x73434608" referenced memory at "0x04a006fc". The
memory could not be "read".

Click on OK to terminate the program.

I have followed previous instructions in this group to eliminate any
spyware. There was none on the machine. I have also disabled IE third party
programs as i found on an adobe forum that acrobat sometimes caused this. The
alieviated some of the crashes, but not all. However, this is now occuring on
a PC of mine without acrobat reader installed!!!

Any help would be very gratefully recieved!

Cheers

Hi Digital_Biscuit :-)

Try the following and see if it helps:

Clear your TIF's -

Safely Delete the Temporary Internet Files

and........

You may have a hijacker, malware, spyware or parasites on your system
causing this problem. Thus, in addition to running your updated anti-virus
program, you should do the following to be sure none of these are present on
your system. Although you may have already run one or more of the programs,
please do so again according to the instructions below. Some variants of
malware can replicate themselves over and over if not removed properly.
Please follow all instructions carefully to be sure your system is
thoroughly cleaned:

Dealing with Unwanted Spyware and Parasites:
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/unwanted.htm
Be sure to run CWShredder, Ad-aware and Spybot.
If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread

evaluate your log and advise you of the necessary steps to clean your
system.

CAUTION!!!!! Before you try to remove spyware using any of the programs
below, download a copy of LSPFIX from any of the following sites:

http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html
(if your OS is Win2k or XP) The process of removing certain malware may kill
your internet connection. If this should occur, this program, LSPFIX, will
enable you to regain your connection.

You might also want to get Art's updater, SYS-UP.Zip, here for future
updating of these: http://home.epix.net/~artnpeg/.
(If you download and use the updater from the beginning, it will
automatically handle downloading the other files. Place them in a dedicated

and......

NOTE: If you can not download these programs from the Internet, if your PC
has CD read capabilities, go to another computer with CD-ROM burning
capabilities. Create a folder on the hard drive of the other computer called
HOLD, download the programs to that folder, then burn that folder to a CD.
Copy the HOLD folder to your HD and then install the programs from there
and run them. After you have IE access again, update all programs where
possible to get the latest definitions and run them again in Safe Mode to be
sure there are no lingering items on the system.

I have already done all of these steps and am free according to the
programs, of any junk!!!

Is there anything else i can do??

Hi Digital_Biscuit :-)

I just thought of something else you might also try:

Go to DOS: START - RUN - type COMMAND - press ENTER. (To exit type EXIT)

At the DOS C:\ prompt type the following, hitting enter after each line.

regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 Shell32.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 Urlmon.dll

It usually sorts the problem out.

also........

At the C:\ prompt type the following and hit enter

sfc /scannow

Then reboot and try the repair/reinstall again.

Hope this helps

Hi Digital_Biscuit :-)

Sorry, you did not provide information as to what you had already tried in
your original post, I provided the usual procedures for this type of
problem. Also, you did not relate what additional steps you may have taken
in this reply, Therefore, I can only suggest at this point that, if you
have not done so, you can do a repair/reinstall of the IE, as some of the
files may have become corrupted or damaged. Also, if you have not already
done so, be sure that you have the proper Java installed. If you need
assistance with these steps please post back. :-)

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

You state repair/reinstall again. Where is the info on how to do this?

Be sure that your AV and firewall is disabled before starting. The following
information will help you to do the Repair/Reinstall of XP.

Windows XP

or...................

Courtesy of Robert Aldwinckle

XP users who have installed IE6sp1 before upgrading to XPsp1
will have setupwbv.dll and will be able to do a repair using

rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance

Otherwise, they have to use

sfc /scannow

etc., or reinstall IE6 (Ref: KB318378)

or......................

Courtesy of Jim Byrd:

There is no direct Repair function for IE6 in XP. Here are some
alternatives:

1. With XP you need to go to Start|Run and type "sfc /scannow"
(without the quotes and notice the space between the c and the /.)
Have your XP CD handy and be prepared to go get a cup of coffee - it
takes a while. This will do the same thing as Repair IE6 for XP but a
lot more, that is find any corrupt system files and replace them. It
does not, however, re-register the various software components (except
possibly the ones it replaces?) AFAIK.

Be aware that under certain circumstances (Win2k before SP4 - see mskb
814510,
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;Q814510) sfc
can erroneously overwrite (restore over) previously installed files
from certain "hotfixes" which will then need to be re-installed. To
check for this, after running sfc, open a Cmd window and enter
"qfecheck /v /l:c:\" (without the quotes). If you don't have qfecheck
installed, it can be obtained for XP here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=35468 and for
Win2k, obtain qfecheck here:
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/release.asp?ReleaseID=35470

2. Another alternative that works on Win2k and may or may not work on
XP (but probably does - I've heard both stories), for just IE6 repair
if you don't have IE6 listed in Add-Remove Programs, then in Start|Run
then enter

"rundll32 setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance"

without the quotes, exactly as shown, and select the appropriate entry.

3. If you find that you need to do a re-install of IE6 then you can
consider the following, I can't verify this for XP (I'm Win2k - it
works there, and I've had good reports from XP users), but you might
want to give it a try at your own risk. Again, enter this at Start|Run
without the quotes and be careful about the spacing:

"rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132
C:\windows\inf\ie.inf"

4. Lastly, here is a link to a MSKB article about re-installing
IE6/OE6:

You cannot install some updates or programs

Unable to install Internet Explorer 6 on XP
http://www.tek-tips.com/gfaqs.cfm/lev2/67/lev3/70/pid/779/fid/1586

or................

Here is a more recent suggestion I have been giving to XP users
who want to try some repair procedures.

<TITLE>831429 - Windows XP stops responding when you download updates
from Windows Update</TITLE>

It is actually a more comprehensive set of re-registrations than an
IE Repair with the default FixIE.inf would do for either NT5.

Although they are listed specifically for W2K they should apply
equally to XP.

Additionally, the information here may be of some assistance:

Hi

Many thanks for the help you have offered already, but we are still having
problems.

I am yet to try sfc /scannow as it requires access to the SP2 upgrade store,
which has moved and i cannot seem to be able to change where it is looking.
(permissions set correctly).

However, now i have other machines that have upgraded that are getting these
errors more frequently than i am!

Machine 1 has done all whats said (apart from sfc /scannow) and also
disabled every add-on and gets the crashes pretty frequently

Machine 2 is crashing with a slightly different error message. AppName is
iexplore.exe and ModName is mshtml.dll.

If you need any more information then please let me know!

Many thanks
Darren

Hi Darren :-)

We first need to see where the area is that's causing the problem, then we
can find the solution. :-)

What Anti-Virus program do you have?

Here is what I have found on this type of error (memory can't be read) so
far. ALthough you have XP, it covers 2000, it could also apply:

Error Message: Memory Could Not Be Read
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=262490

On the new error:

Buttons to Windows XP Style
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?kbid=822350

Mshtml.dll error

(SBSD, AA, CWS, HJT)

Some have reported that removing their Google toolbar fixed your symptom, in
case you have it.

Another known third-party interferer is Norton's Internet Security 2000:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPOR...enDocument&prod=&ver=&src=&pcode=&svy=&csm=no >

You may need to replace the MSHTML.DLL file, go here and download it to
replace. Just find the one in your system and rename it, then replace it
with the new file. Make sure it is the right version for your OS: Go
here, scroll to the M and then find the MSHTML.DL and click it, it will set
up for download.
http://www.5starsupport.com/info/dll.htm

also....

Click Start, and then click Run.
Type regsvr32 urlmon.dll, and then click OK.
When you receive the "DllRegisterServer in urlmon.dll succeeded" message,
click OK.
If this does not resolve the problem, repeat steps 2 through 4 for each of
the following files (in step 3, replace Urlmon.dll with each of the file
names below):
Shdocvw.dll
Msjava.dll
Actxprxy.dll
Oleaut32.dll
Mshtml.dll
Browseui.dll
Shell32.dll

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.

Again, thanks for the reply!

Anti-virus program is Network Associates, VirusScan.

We did have the google toolbar, but uninstalled it ages ago.

Did the replacing and reinstalling of the dll's. I shall let you know if the
problem has been resolved.
