Alex

Lately my IE6 program is spontaneously shutting down, usually
immediately after I click the "back" button.

My OS is Windows 2000 Pro.

I've already re-installed:

WindowsXP-Windows2000-Script56-KB917344-x86-enu.exe

and

Encpack_Win2000Admin_EN.exe

with no improvement.

Recommendations?

Here are sample Event log entries after an IE crash:

When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1
(http://aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to use.
It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware. **Post

forums for expert analysis, not here.**

If the procedures look too complex - and there is no shame in admitting this
isn't your cup of tea - take the machine to a local, reputable and
independent (i.e., not BigBoxStoreUSA) computer repair shop.

Norton Antivirus and Spybot have found nothing. Of course spybot
always finds some minor cookies, etc. which I always allow it to
remove. HiJackThis has also not turned up anything alarming either.

PA Bear, I am having the same problem. All was fine until latest batch of
updates. Now I have had dozens of IE has a problem and must close errors btw
I do send error reports. I treid the hotfix of turning off HTTP1.1 but it
has not helped. Any other ideas?

Hazcat, please begin your own, new thread in this newsgroup about /your/
problem & state your Windows version.

This sounds a LOT like an issue with a recent Microsoft Windows Update
critical update.
There is a known bug in KB918899 in MSHTML.dll causing lots of systems
(including some of MS's own products) to crash IE.

A hotfix is now available through Microsoft Product Support (and given
it is a product issue it should be deemed free, but don't quote me).

KB article 926996, Fix numbers 187899 and 187898 for server and client.

I have been told the release via Windows Update will occur as part of a
cumulative update in October.
