After a stupid error by me I cannot get IE to keep the "never dial a
connection" option.

This is what happened.

I ran a scan of the registry using REGSEEK and deleted a load of keys it
said were not used.

After this Norton AV would not work, so I reinstated the registry and
it still would not start up.

So I uninstalled Norton and installed it (3 times) until it installed ok
and auto-updated correctly.

While doing this and rebooting in safe mode 2 or 3 times all my services
got disabled! I have set these back to what I think they should be to
the best of my ability, but now whenever I reboot the internet
connections insist on resetting themselves to "dial whenever an internet
connection is not present".

Anybody any idea how to get this selection to persist after a reboot?

TIA

Steve

It sounds like you screwed up the PC by your actions using REGSEEK and deleting keys. If
you are using WinXP then you should restore the OS using a Restore Point prior to using
REGSEEK and deleting said keys.

If I had one I would! I do have a Norton Ghost backup but don't really
want to go down that route until I have exhausted other possibilities.

I think restoring a Ghost image is your recourse if you don't have a system Restore cache
restore point that you can use.

Regseeker took a backup of the keys it deleted which I have merged back
into the registry. Its still does not work. This suggests to me that
it has nothing to do with the registry.

Any ideas?

Another question. Why does "dial whenever a network connection is not
present" not recognize a lan connection as a network connection?

Just to update you I restored from a Ghost image and all is now fine.
Except of course I now have heaps of crap back in my registry!!

So ?

If it works, why fix it (or break it) ?

Because it slows things down.

Not really. As you can see, more harm can be done than can be gained in speed.
