I do hope someone can advise ? Whatever type of Windows Update facility I
select - either from the Start Menu, From the Microsoft website, etc etc, a
web page opens blank, then hangs, then closes itself....or hangs for a few
seconds then I get the "Not Responding" message........Basically anything
that refers to V5 seems to close straight away as if I'm being stopped from
doing something ? I have a perfectly legitimate copy of windows so can't
understand ? I just cannot update anything unless you select individual files
from the Microsoft page direct. As I don't know what I'm looking for, it's
getting frustrating !!

Windows version?

Is this a sudden, new problem or an ongoing one?

Any other new or unwanted behavior when browsing (e.g., using Search or
clicking on links, homepage changed, pop-ups warning you about your Security
or infections)?

Hi PA Bear - Thanks for the msg... Well, It's XP Home Edition (SP2) on a Sony
Vaio lap top. My partner hasn't run any updates when prompted recently
(webroot Spysweeper, Norton Antivirus 2003 ) So I was going through a
housekeeping excerise getting everything updated ( all successful) until the
Windows update part.. Got this browser window closing issue......lots of
re-boots but still the same thing with the browser window closing as soon as
you open anything that resembles a current windows update window....through
manual intervention you can get v4 windows opening but not doing anything,,,
anything with a v5 mention e.g just closes or hangs the browser window ???
Just can't fathom it !! Have tried disabling all anti virus/firewall (Norton
2003) and Spysweeper (current) versions but still the same thing ? Selecting
Windows Update from the Start menu, you see the page details opening at the
bottom of the window,,,then it just closes itself with NO error messages ???
What on earth ?!

Not a good sign...

Update SpySweeper and NAV, manually if necessary > Reboot into Safe Mode and
scan with each one, in turn > Fix (delete or quarantine) anything found.

Any better?
