This only proves that you have a reached a functioning modem.
It does nothing to prove that you have a TCP/IP connection.
Before assuming that there is a problem with IE you need to prove
that you have connectivity with the Internet. E.g in NTx issue the
command:
ipconfig /all
and verify that you at least have: an IP address and at least one
usable DNS server address.
Once I try to open IE6 it says that page cannot be found. If I go to
any other pages it says 'cannot open the search page'.
What is wrong?
You haven't disclosed your OS so there isn't much anybody can do to
to make specific suggestions for diagnostics. Try using your Windows
Help? (E.g. in XP press Win-F1 and click on "Networking and the Web")
Otherwise try looking at articles such as these:
<title>KB241344 - Error message: The page cannot be displayed</title>
<title>KB326155 - "The Page Cannot Be Displayed" Error Message When You Try to Start Internet Explorer</title>
(MSKB Boolean search for
"TCP/IP" AND troubleshoot AND kbie600search
)
Good luck
