At some websites, when attempting to Open a file, or Download it or Save As
.... I get an error message like this:

"IE cannot download ... filename.PDF)); from windowOpener(escape(" ...
IE was not able to open this Internet site.
The requested site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try
again later."

I use the latest IE6. Operating system: Windows 98.

I've searched all the Microsoft and msvp sites to no avail. I would be very
grateful for solution clues.

I have the same problem. Did you ever find a fix to
this? If so, please e-mail it to me. Thanx.

The webservers in question are probably running apache 1.3 webservers
with the mod_gzip (compression module) enabled.

Internet Explorer isn't very good at uncompression gzipped data.

Regarding pdf-files:
http://www.schroepl.net/projekte/mod_gzip/browser.htm.htm

"When working together with the Adobe Acrobat Reader the Internet Explorer
seems to have a problem handling gzip-compressed PDF documents."

More of this on the bottom of that page.

Also: http://webcompression.org/gzip-compress.html

"PDF files should not be GZIP-encoded, as they are already compressed in
their native format, and compressing them leads to issues when attempting
to display the files in Adobe Acrobat Reader"

Compression of pdf-files is for the webmaster to deside, though.
