I'm using XP home with al cable modem connection, and have been having the same problems
since last Saturday night.
I have tried all of the things you mention, aside from system restore, plus some other
minor things, all to no avail.
I did, however, find MSN explorer on my computer, and have been using that, instead of the
Explorer windows, that way, when you click on a link that would normally open a dead IE
window, it opens another MSN window.

Well, I finally got mine working. I witch I could tell you exactly what I did, but the
only reason I got it going was because of a few people on TechTV's Call For Help message
boards, helping me through my logfile of Hijackthis, a nifty program aimed at un-hijacking
your browser from bad people. Go here; http://www.tomcoyote.org/hjt/ download and unzip
Hijackthis, then post to their boards (not this one, as it can get quite lengthy) the
logfile of your scan. Knowledgeable people will be able to tell you what to delete, etc.
Also, update and run spybot a lot.

Thanks did that but no help so I re-installed WinXP Pro.
Had to re-activate it and then finally everything was
working again. After a check on Windows Update I found 41
(!)critical updates including WinXP SP1. So I installed
SP1 but after reboot IE stopped working again. So I
removed SP1 and got IE to work again. Really dont know the
reason why. Ill try to install all critical updates one by
one and check whether IE works or not.
