IE6 cannot be repaired

I have also given up on IE6 - well almost completely. I
was unable to view sites anymore. I would go to sites and
get something completely different popping up, usually
advertising. Now I have lost the bar that I NEED to write
web addresses in. I have to look via google - since I
have now set it to be my homepage. I have given up and
am looking for alternatives but I would like to get it
working cause I like it

I have spent more than enough time on this. according to
Microsoft, once ie6 sp1 is damaged it cannot be
repaired. In fact they told me it is impossible to
completely remove IE6 SP1 from ones computer. Their
suggestion was to install Netscape and wait for a fix to
be posted on their website. Their words not mine. The
call cost me $35 to find this out.

Check your system for "hijackware".

HijackThis (http://www.spywareinfo.com/~merijn/files/hijackthis.zip) is the
preferred tool to use these days. It will help to both identify and remove
any hijackware/spyware. **Post your files to
http://forums.spywareinfo.com/, not here.**

Also update your virus definitions and then run a full system scan. From
now on, do both daily.

Already did this...no hijacking, no spy software.
According to Microsoft, its a know bug and cannot be
repaired short of reinstalling the entire operating
system. Best to use a browswer that is not so tied into
the operating system.

hi,
I have similar problem on IE6 browser, try download IEAK6
from windows update download... good luck

*What* is a "known bug" that only reinstalling Windows will fix?

Have you run HijackThis and posted to the recommended forum?

You may be able to return to your previous IE version but you cannot
uninstall IE.[/QUOTE]

Check your system for "hijackware".

You guys keep saying that.....that is NOT the problem!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
It's your answer to everything!

So please READ this and report back to your mothership!!!

After doing the last Windows Update IE 6 keeps locking up at random
intervals...up pops the Not Responding box with MS's typical lack of
an error explanation. I have seen dozens of people reporting the SAME
problem on many different newsgroups and forums.

MS get off your bloated fat ass and fix it.

Rant alert!

1. We're all volunteers here, BB, even MVPs.

2. MVP's are *not* MS employees or representatives.

3. None of us are necessarily saying hijackware *is* the problem but it's
likely to be, so rule out the possibility by running HijackThis and posting
your files to http://forums.spywareinfo.com for the experts (not you) to
evaluate. Posters ask and we're giving you our best suggestions.

4. Originator of this thread, Ed M. (who posts from the web-interface,
stated his OS, and who seldom, if ever, posts back to the original thread),
posted this error in his first thread (29 Nov-03):

<paste>
Error Signature
AppName: iexplore.exe APPVer: 6.0.2800.1106
ModNme: Unknown ModVer: 0.0.0.0
</paste>

From my experience, I suspect hijackware *is* his problem.

5. This is your first posting to this thread and to this newsgroup (AFAICT)
about *your* problem. Not one poster in this thread has posited that his
problem started "after doing the last Windows Update." Where did you get
this update, Windows Update? Was your anti-virus application disabled and
were all running processes closed prior to downloading/installing the
update(s)? What's *your* OS?

6. Are you aware that just about every MS update/patch since March-03 is
uninstallable via Add/Remove Programs? If an update is responsible for your
problems, uninstalling it should fix it, yes?

7. Don't blame MS for how you use your computer, let alone your browser.

Hardly a rant at all! :-)

I am aware of this.

Trouble is I "read" this newsgroup long before I posted and I feel too
many users problems are attributed to Malware/Hijackware.

Maybe not here but they have on at least 2 other UseNet support
groups. They stated it started after they ran the last series of
updates on the MS Windows Update page.
Where did you get this update, Windows Update?

The MS Windows Update web site as accessed from Tools>Windows Update.
Was your anti-virus application disabled and
were all running processes closed prior to downloading/installing the
update(s)? What's *your* OS?

Yes and Yes.....Win2K Pro + SP4....along with Adaware, SpySweeper,
SpyBot S&D and Spy Blaster....NAV2004.....plus a trojan sweeper ALL
kept completely up to date and used very frequently.
6. Are you aware that just about every MS update/patch since March-03 is
uninstallable via Add/Remove Programs? If an update is responsible for your

If it was a security patch that caused this I am not too keen on
uninstalling it. And it was three Critical Updates that were waiting
that day.
7. Don't blame MS for how you use your computer, let alone your browser.

Or from our view.....don't screw us around because YOU (MS) lost that
law suit and now have to scramble to find another way to interface IE
with applets!

No wonder I am using Opera and Firebird more every day.

You get bonus points for at least having read previous threads, BB. More

IMHO too many user problems are *due* to Malware/Hijackware. Not even a
year ago, this and other MS newsgroups had at least 50% fewer posts. In the
past year, especially with file-sharing applications becoming even more
popular, problems due to hijackware (and variants) have become increasingly
pandemic, so much so that MS recently awarded several posters here MVP
status due to their work in the hijackware field. Check out
http://forums.spywareinfo.com to get an idea how widespread this problem is
and how many are being helped in these and other forums.

It is *not* fun to repeatedly post "check your system for hijackware"
missives, believe me, nor is it at all rewarding when posters from the
web-interface never find their way back here, let alone know to click on the
+ sign to see replies. Many knowledgeable posters have simply given up and
never venture into this or any other IE newsgroups.

*Now* you tell us...

Suit yourself. Logic dictates that uninstalling any/all of them (and using
System Restore) might prove it/they were/were not to blame for your
problem(s).

Enjoy them. I am *not* defending the IE browser whatsoever.

Oh...by the way.....here is the content of 3 messages posted here on
this UseNet group within the last week.....all seem to have the same
problem as I have. All were posted within 24 hours of each other
under an IE 6 freezing up subject line.

OK...I am looking for the fix to this IE6 freezing up all
the time. Several problems noted in this newsgroups with
the same problem I am happening. IE6 freezes up, says it
has to close, then I send error report.
Where are the answers? I nn the fix.....

I am having the same problem. It started sometime last
weekend. At least, I noticed it for the first time
Monday morning. I can use IE6 for a while before it
freezes completely. Mine freezes and I get only the
hourglass and have to access the Windows Task Manager and
end IE! This is crippling!

I'm in the same boat!
Soon as I installed the last critical update....FREEZE! :-(

*****

On another newsgroup one of these people replied he also had done the
critical updates on the weekend before he noticed IE freezing up.

No mention of having installed updates immediately prior to the freezing.
Most likely hijackware or Trojan.

The November Updates were released on 11 Nov-03. How does "last Monday"
relate to this date? No mention of installing updates. Hijackware or
Trojan likely, or "dirty" install of MS updates due to AV app or other
Windows processes running at the time.

Critical update from Windows Update or from an email attachment? (Don't
laugh, it still happens!) If the former, under what circumstances was the
update installed?

Again, from where and under what circumstances?

The update(s) *may* be the problem but until any of the above is ruled out,
don't rule them out. I'd posit that hundreds of millions of Windows users
have installed the November Updates without problem.
