IE6 browser creates continuous audio noise after click on any link

I have just installed IE6 on WinNT SP6. There were no
errors in the install. I rebooted the system and ran
IE6. Initial page loads OK, but on the first click on any
link the audio turns on, providing a LOUD screechy noise.
I terminated IE6 but the sound continued. When I tried to
run WinAmp, it said another program is using your
soundcard. So what is that program and how do I terminate
it?

OK, I got rid of the ear drum piercing noise. I used the
START > SETTINGS > CONTROL PANEL > SOUNDS > WINDOWS
EXPLORER and set all of the sound options to (None).
I suspect that IE6 is using my sound driver incorrectly,
of course I have no idea how IE6 plays Wave sounds in NT.
If it is using the Windows Media Player, then it should be
noted that Win NT does not allow installation of the Media
Player update. I suspect that this is for a good reason,
like incompatibility of the new driver.
Isn't there a fellow egghead out there with an insight to
share on this? I would like to be entertained once more
with the nifty sound effects when I click on hyperlinks.
Thanks.

I later determined that a subsequent install of Netscape
loaded a fresh version of Real Audio. [It has the
undesired (in fact rude) property of installing itself as
the default service for audio files without asking.] I
set the default for *.wav files to Windows Media Player
and all is well...
Sleep tight.

I'm having the same problem w/ screenhing noise and newly
installed IE6 on WinNT4.0. I used your suggestion below
and also I've deleted Real Audio Player. Problem still
persists. It really bugs. Got any other ideas I can try?

Real Player is also bundled with spywares.

Try this: Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Browsing
Uncheck the Enable 3rd party browser extensions

If this clears your problem then find out who the culprit (s) is/are with
these tools.

Let AD-Aware Scan your system for advertising Spyware

or:

SpyBot-S&D
http://security.kolla.de/

p.s Reset the 3rd party browser setting.
