IE6 breaks internet connection

Running IE6 on XP Home with SP2. Windows firewall only. Norton AV.
This is a dial connection.

Once dialled, IE6 browses to various websites for approximately 5 minutes
and then gives 'site unavailable' to any further attempts.
If the connection is dialled but IE6 not used, various processes such as
Windows Update, Norton update, Outlook all work without problem.
ipconfig /all shows assigned address and dns servers as expected.
This is a new install of XP. I have subsequently re-installed IE6 to try and
fix this problem. Adaware and Spybot both come up clean. Lspfix shows no
problem. Hijackthis shows no problems. Registering various DLL's as
suggested in the NG produced no change.
SFC wont run because it asks for the original disk but this is an OEM
install.
I am at my wits end to understand how to fix this problem. In the meantime I
have installed Firefox which works without any of these problems.

I don't like to give up on this so any useful suggestions would be much
appreciated.

TIA

Hi,
Possibly a corrupt cache? Try deleting the TIF folder. See
http://mvps.org/winhelp2002/delcache.htm Then set the size of the TIF folder
to 50-60 MB.

Someting here http://www.mvps.org/inetexplorer/answers.htm#dns may help.

You might have malware running that Ad-aware and Spybot didn't find. Go to
http://www.aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm Do the precleaning steps and
post a log to the forum at http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30
Please read this message before posting the log

Deleting the TIF structure fixed this problem.

Don
You are most welcome.

I believe the problem may have originated with the Files and Settings
Transfer Wizard, which I had used to pull all the user stuff of their old
machine. Maybe the TIF got corrupted on the restore. I think there is a
lesson for the future here in that I will ensure that all folders/files are
cleared on the originating machine before running the wizard ...

Thanks again

Geoff
