Hi intrig :-)
help, running windows XP pro. just reformat and reinstall the hdd.
all the sudden when i connect to my local ISP and launch IE6, it auto
shutdown my pc (with a timer) and showed the error code 1073701819
(code which i can't seem to find in IE help page).

everything else is okay - ie. if i connect to the local ISP and check
my mail in Outlook Express it's fine but once i launch IE6, it auto
shutdown again. help pls. thanks.

Try the following and see if it helps. You may have lost propre connection
with your server.

LSPFIX - may enable you to regain your connection.
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

also............

You may have parasites, spyware, adware, malware, or hijackware on
your system causing the problem, which your antivirus will not detect, as it
does not have the same definitions. Download and install, then you *MUST*
update the programs prior to running to be sure they have the latest
definitions, then run the programs below. They are free and very effective.
Be sure to run both SpyBot and Adaware, as what one does not detect the
other may. It is important that you do all
the steps and follow all directions carefully:

(NOTE: If you can not download these programs from the Internet, if your PC
has CD read capabilities, go to another computer with CD-ROM burning
capabilities. Create a folder on the hard drive of the other computer called
HOLD, download the programs to that folder, then burn that folder to a CD.
Copy the HOLD folder to your HD and then install the programs from there
and run them. After you have IE access again, update all programs where
possible to get the latest definitions and run them again to be sure there
are no lingering items on the system.

IMPORTANT:
Before trying to remove spyware using the programs below, download a copy of
LSPFIX from the URL below - some malware may kill your internet connection
when it is removed, this program will enable you to regain your connection.
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

Also get a copy of WINSOCKFIX available at:
http://www.spychecker.com/program/winsockxpfix.html

It is important that you run the programs in the order that they are listed
here. The first three programs will clear your machine of all other items so
that you can have a clear HiJackThis Log for the experts to read and analyze
for you.

Go to

or

and download HiJackThis. Unzip to a folder other than your Desktop or the
Temp folder, doubleclick HiJackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log"
button. Press that, save the log some place you remember where it is.
Most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so DO NOT fix
anything yet.

Open the copy of your log in NotePad and make a copy. Then you can go here

Try searching for its hex equivalent then.
But if so, the sign if any would be important.
For example -1073701819 == 0xC0009C45
but 1073701819 == 0x3FFF63BB

The latter is unlikely because the two high-order bits are usually on when
there has been a fatal error.

But from your other symptom--the count down to shut down
I suspect that you have made a typo in the code so further
diagnosis using what you have given may be pointless.

For example, if you try a Google Groups search with
sasser worm code count down
you will see that the code given with that symptom is almost
always -1073741819 (which for the record would be 0xC0000005
--a much more common failure code indicating an unrecoverable page fault.)

everything else is okay - ie. if i connect to the local ISP and check my
mail in Outlook Express it's fine but once i launch IE6, it auto shutdown
again. help pls. thanks.

<title>Windows XP Users: What to Do If Your Computer Has Been Infected by Sasser</title>
< http://www.microsoft.com/security/incident/sasser_printxp.mspx >

If you are lucky these crashes just represent unsuccessful attempts
by the worm to infect your system. I.e. it has to crash your system
to establish the exploit but there may be cases in which the payload
is incompatible with the crashed sytem and is thus prevented from
gaining a hold permanently.

In that case the most important thing for you to do would be
to activate a firewall if you haven't done so already.

For your convenience here are the instructions from Step 5 of that article

<quote>
Step 5: Enable a Firewall

A firewall is a piece of software or hardware that creates a protective
barrier between your computer and the Internet. Microsoft does not
manufacture stand-alone software firewalls. The following resources
provide more information about some firewall options.

1. On the taskbar at the bottom of your screen, click Start, and then
click Control Panel.

2. Click the Network and Internet Connections category.
(If the Network and Internet Connections is not visible, click Switch to
Category View under Control Panel on the left side of the Control Panel window.)

3. Click Network Connections.

4. Right-click the Dial-up, LAN, or High-Speed Internet connection that you
use to connect to the Internet, and then click Properties from the shortcut menu.

5. On the Advanced tab, under Internet Connection Firewall, select Protect
my computer and network, and then click OK. The Windows XP firewall is
now enabled.

Good luck
