ie6 and sp3 mystery

After I installed SP3 my shortcut for IE6 vanished as did iexplore.exe
from c:\program files\internet explorer.

Ixplore turned up in Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386 and in
Windows\SoftwareDistribution\Downloads...

I created a shortcut to the iexplore in Windows\ServicePackFiles\i386
and everything seems to work well.

One curiosity: when I attempted to copy iexplore.exe to program
files\internet explorer, the message came up that it was already there!
Well, Explorer does not show it to be there. Can't figure that one out.

When I installed SP3 on my other computer (laptop), iexlore.exe remained
in the program files\internet explorer folder.

Any ideas as to why there was a problem with my other install?

And does this behavior persist if you uninstall WinXP SP3 via Add/Remove
Programs?

Since everything appears to be in good working order, I am reluctant to
uninstall sp3 for fear of creating new problems.

Well, you asked: "Any ideas as to why there was a problem with my other
install?"

Thanks for the url's. I submitted the issue to Microsoft. Glad to see
that they are offering free support.
