IE6 and "My Computer"

Guest

The address bar in IE6 is not functioning properly. I am able to visit links
by typing the URL and clicking go. The address bar's drop down menu works
extremely slowly. When I click on the My Computer icon I am experiencing the
same problem...5 minutes to load content.

I have scanned my computer for spyware and viruses...nothing.

Can anyone offer suggestions?

Thank you!

Dani,

I have a very similar problem. Launching My Computer gives me a flashlight
for 5 mi than displays devices. If I type in any URL in the address bar, IE
takes 5 minutes as well. My address bar dropdown does not cause a problem.
Netscape is fine. I know this doesn't resolve your problem but I will send
you an email if I find an answer first.

OK -
check out your Internet connection settings - is there a proxy server
configured?? should there be?
You may have a virus/spyware hijack

download the Stinger from here and run it to make sure that A-V-disabling
viruses are not present on your PC
http://vil.mcafeesecurity.com/vil/averttools.asp

- update your virus scanner and run a full system scan of all files.

Reboot to Safe Mode and run CWShredder - to remove variants of the
CoolWebSearch hijacker.

Use CWShredder, the removal tool:
http://www.intermute.com/products/cwshredder.html
(download it without the accompanying rubbish)

download AdAware SE Personal Edition from www.lavasoftusa.com, install,
update, and run it to remove spyware, adware, and other such nasties from
your system.

Hi Dani :)

Try the following and see if it helps:

Download the fix - Reset Search:
http://www.spywareinfo.com/downloads/tools/IEFIX.reg
This will restore your default Search functionality. However, if you had
any custom adjustments you have made will have to re-select them.

or……

This will restore the Windows defaults for a whole lot of Search related
registry entries.

CAUTION: BACKUP YOUR REGISTRY FIRST!

Close IE, copy the bold to Notepad, save as Search.reg (save as 'all files',
and doubleclick. Answer 'yes' when prompted to add the contents of
Search.reg to the Registry:
