IE6 and disconnection requests

My cousin is running XP HE SP2, IE6.

Everytime a webpage loads, to use her terminology, "a box appears and asks
if I want to disconnect from the Internet". I'm sure this is just a tick
that needs removing from a box... but my memory escapes me :-)

Could someone please tell me how to stop IE doing this?

(I did search the NG but was unable to find a relative posting )

Many thanks,
Babs

Hi Babs :-)

You don't mention the type of connection, such as Dial-up, DSL or cable,
but, try the information below and see if it helps:

This issue is caused when "Disconnect when connection may no longer be
needed," option enabled.

Go to IE>Tools>Internet Options>Connection>Dial up settings>Advanced dial up
settings.

Make sure that "Disconnect when connection may no longer be required" is
unchecked.
Also, uncheck the option to "Disconnect if idle"
Later Windows versions have an option to disconnect when connection speed
drops below a certain percentage. Uncheck this as well.

Also...if she uses Outlook Express as her email or newsreader:

Go to Outlook Expres>Tools>Options>Connection and uncheck the "Connect to
this account using.." for each of the mail and news accounts. Additionally,
each account should show the Connection option of "Any available".

Hope this helps.

Hi Jan,

I'm sorry... she's actually on DSL, but has had some problems connecting
recently. I'm away from home at the moment, so can't physically check the
problem (I usually try and help her as best as I can), so I think the
connection settings are all over the place, hence the 'Dial Up' message. OE
is her email program.

Thanks for your help, I'll pass this on and let you know the outcome.

Regards,
Babs

Hi Babs :-)

Thank you for the confirmation on the connection. I believe the problem may
be that she has a Proxy setting somewhere that is causing the problem.

When you get home, here are some things you can also check and see how they
are set:

Disable Proxy Settings
Tools>Internet Options> Connections tab> LAN Settings button
Under Proxy server, make sure the box there is UNchecked

Check the *Automatically detect settings* in the LAN Settings for
the Internet Options. If it is checked, UNcheck it.

also.....

Lan Settings- Proxy Server - Disable
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/regs_edits/proxyenableundo.reg

and...

Prevent IE from disconnecting with DSL or cable connection

Go to Control Panel>Network and Dialup Connections>
Local Area Connection>Click Properties on the General tab
Click Configure on the next General tab
Click the Power Management tab
UNcheck the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power”
Ok all the way out

Hope this helps.
