It works locally, but not on the Net.

Win2K SP4, IE6, SP1, all security patches.

?

Sorry about the exact text of the error message. It is:

"The page cannot be displayed"
....
"Cannot find server or DNS error"

It happens with all pages.

This is a related problem: in XP, IE6 sp1, only a few
select websites cause this same error message--one of
those sites is "www.microsoft.com"! Can't update
Microsoft applications, files, etc. The site is not a
restricted site but listed as a trusted site...Any
thoughts?

It appears the culprit is AOL, in the form of my new Wal-Mart Connect ISP
software. They swear they are *not* AOL, but their software is based on AOL.

Now I have to decide whether to spend hours and only maybe fixing it, or to
simply give up and go back to my former, $14 more per month, ISP. Poop!

:-(

Well, I found that some "web accelerators" corrupt the
HOSTS file with a table of set IP addresses for visited
websites and because of that any website that uses
dynamic addressing is excluded or not found available.

This may/may not be a solution to all websites not being
accessible as well depending on if you or only going to
routine visited websites. That is, try a totally new
website to see if you gain access and thereby determine
if the HOSTS file may your problem too.

Totally new sites don't work either. I'll try the fixes at the link
in the post from Frank Saunders.

I would suggest using a local ISP. Generally these charge $16 to $20 a
month, depending on how many hours of access you want.

I'd go right back to BellSouth if I could afford it. But the problem turned
out to be the Outpost firewall.

It starts out working OK, but after extended use it stops allowing Internet
access. I was fooled this time because I could still sign on to the
Internet.

It has to do with Outpost's DNS caching.

- I cleared the cache.
- I removed the 100-entry cache limit.
- I turned off DNS caching altogether.

IE6 still wouldn't work.

I can't run without a firewall. Is there a newsgroup where I could talk
about Outpost gotchas?

I don't knos what Outpost is.

I don't knos what Outpost is.

OutPost FW folks have decided to support their freeware FW
through a forum. I've heard they are quite helpful. Many times,
they even post screen shots of their rules which can be very
helpful. I've also heard there are lots of dissatisfied users
for them to help. :-)

I prefer Kerio 2.1.5, myself.

I gave up on ZA years ago. Too invasive and hard to uninstall.

Help is also provided in comp.security.firewall NG.

Agnitum Outpost is a free firewall. I switched back to Zone Labs ZoneAlarm,
another free firewall. Problem solved (so far).

Thanks for your kind help, Frank.

Thank you very much for sharing that information Walter. I was also
running Outpost and went back to Zone Alarm which sorted the problem
out. You've saved my a lot of grieft for which I am thankful.
