IE6/Acrobat problems

I have a problem with certain websites opening Adobe Acrobat files. The
files are supposed to open a new window and display the file without
prompting. On one machine, the window opens, remains blank for a few
seconds, then returns the following error message:

Internet Explorer cannot download ...y&Content_Id=6672&Source=file from
ecommerce.barcap.com.

Internet Explorer was not able to open this Internet site. The requested
site is either unavailable or cannot be found. Please try again later.

OK.

The files in question open normally on other computers, so the problem is
not with the website.

I have repaired Acrobat 6 -- no change.
I have uninstalled Acrobat 6 and reinstalled -- no change.
I have uninstalled Acrobat 6 and installed Acrobat Reader 7 -- no change.
I have installed and used Firefox -- no change.
I have installed IE 7 -- no change.
I have uninstalled all of the above and reinstalled Acrobat 6 again -- Now,
I am prompted to "Open" or "Save" when I try to access the files, but the
end results are the same. Zone settings changed to Low still gives me the
prompt even though I see nothing in the Security Settings that should be
prompting me.
I have Restored the system to a point several weeks back before the problem
began -- This got rid of the "Open" or "Save" prompt but it still will not
open the files.
I undid the Restore back to current.

I am currently receiving an "Open" or "Save" prompt but cannot do either
from this website using this particular computer. Again, all other
computers function properly on this site and I can open Acrobat files from
other sites using this computer. All computers are using Windows XP
Professional with latest updates applied and a minimum of 2GB of RAM.

I really don't want to have to reload everything on this computer to resolve
this problem, so if anyone has any ideas that may help, please let me know.

Thanks.

Hi James
1 = Open Internet Explorer
Go to Tools / Internet Options
Click on the Programs tab
Click on the Reset Web Settings button, then Click on Manage Add-Ons and See
if there are other Toolbars have been installed and Disable BHO for them.
Also while there click on Advance Tab and under Browsng Option uncheck this:
[ ] Enable Third Party Web browser extensions (req rest) uncheck this box.
Click OK and Reboot your Machine.

2 = If you click on a hyperlink in a web page and only a blank window appears,

Go to Start / Run
Then enter regsvr32 urlmon.dll
Click Ok when finished
If that single change does not resolve the problem, repeat the process by
running the following additional entries: (one at a time and Reboot/Restart
your machine)
regsvr32 Shdocvw.dll
regsvr32 Msjava.dll
regsvr32 Actxprxy.dll
regsvr32 Oleaut32.dll
regsvr32 Mshtml.dll
regsvr32 Browseui.dll
regsvr32 Shell32.dll

3= If still no joy run this Command in the Run Command Prompt:
sfc /scannow click [OK] and get your XP CD handy to put in when prompted
to do so then Reboot your machine.
Always be sure your computer is Malware free to eliminate the Spyware side
of things.
P.S do one step (1,2,3) at a time from the above and Reboot your machine and
see if the issue resolve.
HTH.
Please post back your Result.

Thanks for the quick reply. Before I jump through a bunch of hoops that may
not help the situation, I have more information and want to make sure your
possible solution(s) are still relevant.

I have determined that the problem exists for only a single user on this
computer. When I log in as myself on his computer, there is no problem. We
both have Administrator rights on the computer.

With this new information, are your suggestions still the best way to go?
Or should I just backup his folder under Documents and Settings and delete
the user and create a new one?

Thanks.

Hi James,
=>Although trying them will not do any harm, you are right deleting the
Account and creating a new may the only solution for a corrupt user account
on this machine, and as you said Back Up first that user Folders and
Documents and delete that account.
=>Another Create the new Account First and see if the issue will reppear
with it or not and you can transfer the files/folder and Dcs to the new one
and then delete the Old account.
Thank you.
