When changing from IE 5.5 to IE 6, the settings on one of our machines at
work changed so that now the active desktop is no longer able to update
it's content automatically. This has something to do with IE6-specific
settings, but we do not know which. These settings are stored in the user
profiles (we ar using Windows 2000).

Does any1 know where we should look to fix this problem with the active
desktop?

Are you sure it's W2K? You would have this symptom if you removed
IE from NT4 and then installed IE6 because you can only get WDU
with IE401sp2 (unless you install IE4Shell_NTx86 as a separate component using ie6setup and ie6wzd):

<title>260090 - Users Without Administrator Privileges Can Complete Internet Explorer Installation After Reboot</title>

Hmm... see if this article gives you any other clues:

<title>258961 - Active Desktop Not Available in Windows 2000 Server</title>

(TechNet search for
"Active Desktop" kbwin2000Search
)

Good luck

Yes, I am quite sure we are using Win2k...

We have found a solution to our problem: returning to IE5.5 on the machine
and re-instating the profile of the user of a few weeks back (before the
IE6-usage).

Someone else encountered the same problems when he was using a different
PC, which has IE6 installed. When he returned to his own machine (with
IE5.5), he encountered the same problems. His active desktop malfunctioned
(no updates possible and JavaScript was not able to run at all). After
restoring his user profile from before he was using the machine with IE6
installed, the problem was resolved and Active Desktop worked again as well
as JavaScript webpages.

I really find this quite odd... hopefully someone knows what MS or IE is
doing to the user profiles that is so 'disastruous' to the functioning of
the Active Desktop.

(Of course people can state: "get rid of the AD, it's resource-heavy", but
I don't find that a solution.)
