I have been having some trouble with other programs since Winxp sp2
downloaded itself. In searcing Microsoft Web pages, went to the suggestion to
find the problem. Clicked on start, then run and typed in sfc /scannow. An
error message came up under Windows File Proctection saying "files that are
required for Windows to run properly have been replaced by unrecognized
version. To maintain system stability, Windows must restore the orginal
version of these files," Then it says to install the service pack 2 cd.
I don't have the cd, it downloaded itself as I have automatic updates turned
on. Now I can't get out of that error box. Donnamv

Hi Donnamv :-)

Try to uninstall the SP2 update from the Add/Remove Programs in the Control
Panel. Then you can plan for the install and do the preliminary steps
needed to get a proper install. After uninstalling the SP2, go through the
information below and follow the recommendations for properly preparing your
system for the SP2 installation.

For your sfc problem check out step#2 here.

But I would follow Jan's advice first.

Hi JanIl, I want to unstall sp2 but I have no idea what date it was
downloaded because it downloaded automatically. Been looking for a date but
seriously have no idea where to look. Can you rell me..Thanks Donnav

Hi Donnamv :-)

Do you have an idea of when you started having this problem? I could not
tell you when it might have been ........

THOUGHT!!......here.......download and install this program and run it!

Belarc Advisor
http://www.download.com/3000-2094_4-10007277.html

It does not need to updated, it is just a utility program, it is not a
scanner for any kind of warez or viruses, it just checks your system and
shows you a report. I think you are going to really like how it works, and
lets you see what your system is all about. It will show you a report of
everything about your system, and should state when the updates were
installed. I almost forgot about it, and I use it myself! When the report
sheet shows up in the window, scroll down to the area where it lists the
updates. You should be able to see when the SP2 was installed. Oh...yes!
One more thing. There should also be a history of the downloads you have had
on the Windows Update site under History. That should also tell you when the
SP2 update was successfully installed (I *think*) if the updates that are
automatically downloaded and installed are logged as the ones you manually
install. Have a look there and do the Belarc report before you do the system
restore so you might have a firm date to work with. If that does not work
then uninstall the SP2, then pick a date...say two weeks ago if available
and restore back to that point and see how it works. If the problem still
exists, and you have any dates before then, then select the oldest date and
restore to that date. Let's see how this works.:-)

Hope this helps :-)
