When I Click on a link on a web page why am I unable to use the back button
to go back to the original page. It's annoying having to use history all of
the time.

Hi mark :-)

Try the following and see if it helps:

Back Button - "Page has expired" error when using back button
http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/answers_10.htm#back

or....

Can't use back button - Page won't release for back return

Either press Shift and click or right-click and choose Open in New Window to
avoid getting trapped on a page and can't use back button to return to
previous page.

or......

Click on the small arrow to the right of the Back button, and select the
next site in the dropdown list, it should take you to the previous page.

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

I get no page expired message.

If I press shift & click, "open in new window" is not highlighted.

Can not click on small arrow to right of back button as again it is not
highlighted. It does not recognise that there was a previous page. It is
almost as if it is re-launching IE everytime I move to a new link.

Hi mark :-)

You do not mention which version of Windows you have, or IE, but, this seems
to be a fairly common problem for folks using WinXP, especially with SP2.
However, I did have the same problem on my WinME machine with IE6 SP1.
Although, it was only with certain sites that it happened. There would be
times when I could not get released from the page other than to close IE.
As you say, very annoying. I found it was actually a problem with the site
itself. It just continues to redirect you back to the same page, like a
captive audience. :-(

Here's a bit of information that explains what can happen to cause this.

Back - Return to the page you just left
http://www.internet4classrooms.com/netscape_buttons.htm
or

also....

Internet Browsing
http://www.santarosa.k12.fl.us/parents/TechTips.htm

and...

Grayed out Buttons and Menu Items that Don't Work:

It is a convention in many Windows programs and in the popular browsers to
"gray out" items that currently aren't applicable. So, if you think your
BACK button isn't working, it may be because in that particular instance it
isn't applicable. For example, if you just opened your browser and this was
the first page you viewed, then there isn't a page to go back to, so the
BACK button is grayed out.

Is it only a few sites, or all of them? Is the site or page opening in a
new window? Opening in a new widow can disable the Back button. In all
dominant browsers, webmasters using the <a target="_blank"> tag to force a
link to open in a new window breaks the Back button. The new window does
not retain the browser history of the previous window, so the "Back" button
is disabled. It does sound as it this might be what is happening on these
sites.

Try using the Refresh button and see if that lets you go back.

Hopefully, the information in one of the suggestions will help with this
problem. If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to
this thread with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

Hi mark
Jan

Guess what?
I went to one of your links and my back button was greyed out.

Which one? Did it open it in a second window?

You still do not say which version of Windows you are using. This
information could be helpful in researching your problem. :-)

Hi mark :-)

You might also check your HOST file:

Strange behavior in the Back Button

Sometimes when you click the Back button to return to the previous page it
appears that nothing happens. What usually occurs is that the HOSTS file has
blocked one or more (<Iframe>) ad pages that are embedded into the web page
you are viewing. To verify this click the small drop-down arrow on the Back
button, do you see just an ad server listed? ... well now you know .....
However there are a few exceptions. In some cases the web page can contain a
script to prevent the user from returning to a previous page.

Note: in most cases AdShield (full version) can prevent the above behavior.
