The nature of most broadband Internet service is that you are always
connected. It is different than dialup. If you run a firewall and have
a current version antivirus (not earlier than 2005) with an active
subscription and updated virus definitions, you'll be fine. And of
course you need to practice "Safe Hex".

Click on Start >> Double Click Control Pane >> Double click Network and
Internet Connections >> Double click Internet Options >> On the IE window
properties click on Conntections Tab and click or select the Radio Button:
(*) Never Dail a connection

Click Ok to confirm your changes and close the IE window.
HTH.
Please report back your result.

Open Internet Explorer or Outlook Express.
Click on File, then click Work Offline.

Unplug your modem 'til you need it.

Yes, that's the way DSL service normally works.

But I don't understand this question. Are you asking how to *not* be
connected all the time (which has nothing to do with selecting IE if
needed)?

If that's your question, the only ways to do so are:

1. Change the kind of internet service you get.

2. Physically disconnect the modem when you're not using it.

3. Turn off the modem, if it has an on-off switch.

Why would you want to do this? Having the connection always on is a big
convenience.

Being automatically connected to the Internet and starting up IE are NOT the
same things. Do you mean that IE starts automatically on boot-up?

Which negates completely the idea of an "always on" connection.....

Always on isn't the deal for me, it's the speed.
