New XP machine from Dell. Cannot access the Internet via Internet
Explorer unless I set security settings to Normal. I prefer to use High,
in view of MS's recommendation to use High because of a security hole.

Also pop-ups appear. I called Dell customer support. They said it may be
due to spyware. I ran anti-virus and Pest Patrol. No viruses or spyware.
Could the pop-ups be from Dell?

Thanks.

Visit the Windows Update web site and download all the
available critical updates. Then set your security settings
in Internet Explorer to Medium.

For Spyware scanning I recommend using Ad-Aware and Spybot (both free)
Although lately I have heard reports of the 2 programs conflicting with each
other, although I havent had any problems myself.
Also, if you have Service pack 2 installed, make sure the pop-up blocker is
turned on. In Internet Explorer click on Tools, then on pop-up blocker, if
it says "Turn off popup blocker", then you know it is on

I also recommend medium as the security setting, as high will give you too
much grief.
