IE Won't start from most places

Lately, the only way I can get IE to start is by clicking on a link, such as
"Windows Update" or an e-mail link. The normal icons don't work. There are
no other symptoms.

I routinely run Spybot, Ad-Aware, Registry Repair and Norton AV. Have also
recently run CCleaner and Hijack This. This does not appear to be a problem
with Malware.

Any other suggestions?

Have you right clicked your IE icons and checked their Properties to see if
they are pointing to iexplore.exe properly? "C:\Program Files\Internet
Explorer\iexplore.exe" is the usual Target path. Does the "regular" desktop
IE icon (if you have one) - the one where you right click, choose Properties
and your Internet Options come up - work?

Sorry, I should have been clearer. Not only do the icons not work (although
the target path is set correctly) I can't even launch IE by double-clicking

on the executable file. I get the hour-glass momentarily, and then
nothing
further.

You might be infested with malware.

Please read the original thread. This is almost certainly NOT a malware
problem.

Try to re-register the DLL files that are related to Internet Explorer:

You will need to uninstall WinXP SP2 from Control Panel -> Add/Remove
Programs and then reinstall Service Pack 2.

Okay. Tried both suggestions. No luck, even after complete re-installation
of SP2 with updates. Any other ideas?

(THX Robear Dyer):
When all else fails, HijackThis v1.99.1

It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware.
