IE won't search from the address bar

A new search page was installed when visiting an uknown
site apparently. I've been through all of the registry
settings that I can find and uninstalled any references
to the offending search site. However, the browser will
now not attempt a search from the address bar. It simply
trys to open a site with whatever phrase has been put in
the address line. For example, if you entered 'weather'
(without the ' marks)in the address bar, it tries to open
http:///? weather and then of course fails.

I used an operational browser that is the exact same
version as a template for the registry settings.

Any suggestions? I've tried all of the standard dialogue
settings under advanced in internet options...

Thanks

First, scan the system for parasites and remove them. SpyBot S&D searches
your harddisk for Spyware and Adware
http://security.kolla.de/

&

Adaware (similar)
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
(Remember to perform a Webupdate to have the latest definitions installed)

This will remove malware from the PC. Next, reset the Search Engine.

Click the Search button in the toolbar > Customize > AutoSearch Settings >
Select a provider from the list.
Open Internet Explorer > Tools > Options > Programs > "Reset Web Settings"

Download the fix - Reset Search:

uh - maybe uninstall ie6 completely and
reinstall? maybe uninstall, install ie5,
then reinstall ie6, to help clear it out?

Try this, it might work:

In IE, display the Search pane (using either Ctrl-E, the
toolbar button, or View/Explorer Bar/Search menu)

In the Search pane, you should see a "Customize" button
near the top of the pane (it's grey). Click it.

At the bottom left of the "Customize Search Settings"
dialog that displays, you should see an "Autosearch
Settings" button. Click it.

From this dialog, you should be able to choose the search
engine and the resulting behavior for Address bar
searching.
