IE won't run

This problem relates to my daughter's computer and the problem is that IE won't start up. All was working fine until a week ago. The computer is on a broadband connection and logs on to the ISP without any difficulty and personal e-mails can be sent and received with Outlook Express. However, as soon as the icon is clicked to start up IE up pops a message "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close". She has responded by sending the error report which is acknowledged as sent. The Error Signature shows AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 6.0.2800.1106 ModName: winshow.dll ModVer: 1.0.0.1 Offset: 0000990
We have tried changing settings for IE, the ISP, Firewall etc and running a virus check but with no success. The final effort was a re-installation of XP Pro and even this did not resolve the problem
Daughter needs her computer for college studies and is very frustrated. I don't really want to have to install all from scratch so can anyone offer a solution to the problem. Obviously she is unable to download any updates etc without her internet connection

Thanks.

Try unplugging the hardware for the isp,you might also remove th
pci card and relocate to another slot,in xp reload the software,i
add/remove programs open windows components (sub-menu),ch
the boxes in networking services, and managment and monitoring tools
That is all other conections to the dish are intact.Unplugging the hardwar
resets it,moving the pci card gets a fresh install.When you re-installed x
how did you get around re-registering,or is that still needed.

my computer is doing almost the same thing but i have to close almost every program just to open my folders....i also tried to sys restore and its not working as a matter of fact that made it worse....

I had pretty much the exact same problem the only difference being my error was in offset 000096fe - just an address difference with different versions of the problem software. It is not a problem with Internet Explorer or XP per se, but is adware that has been loaded onto your PC. Reinstalling XP and IE does not work (I tried both). You must eradicate the offending software and (more importantly) registry entries. I used SpyBot S&D (downloadable for free at www.safer-networking.org) and its removal was automatic and painless. I didn't even have to reboot the system after it was completed (tells you it's not an MS product!).

Hi John,

Hi John,

Scan for malware using ad-aware and spybot.
Try downloading, installing and updating the
spyware removers from the links below. Run both of them.

If still no joy, then consider reinstalling IE:

Copy and paste the following line to the Start > Run prompt, it will
try to reinstall IE and the routine will need the XP CD.

rundll32.exe advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %systemroot%\inf\ie.inf

Alternatively, the routine will ask for diverse files, go to a command
prompt (Start > Run > cmd) and type
dir name_of_file_needed /s (Example dir iesinfo5.ins /s)
This will tell you the location of the file, browse to that path and
click retry.
You will have to do this for 5 or 6 files, which can be bothersome.
But it can also be reinstalled without the CD.

Hope this helps
