My mate's stuck on our football fans forum website and IE crashes whenever he
tries to navigate away from this website. He gets the following error:

AppName: iexplore.exe AppVer: 6.0.2900.2180 ModName:
taskdir.dll
ModVer: 0.0.0.0 Offset: 00000002

Have suggested he virus scan and spyware/ad scan; all to no avail. He can't
reinstall IE as he can't get away from this site when IE opens. Any ideas?

Hi m3tallica :-)

You don't mention the version of Windows you are using, which really is a
must when asking for help in the newsgroups, but, try the following as it
may apply
to your OS and see if it helps:

Try this: Tools > Internet Options > Advanced > Browsing
Uncheck the Enable 3rd party browser extensions

If this allows them to regain control over their IE then it means their
system is infected, and likely with a hijacker or other agressive malware.
But, they will then be able to download and run the removal and cleaning
tools listed below. (It is a good idea to recheck it after you have fully
cleaned your machine, as some third-party browser extensions and add-ons may
interfere with how Internet Explorer views certain Web pages)

If the above still does not allow them to have access to the Internet from
the infected machine, then they will need to download the necessary files
from another machine, burn to a CD or copy to a floppy, then install and run
them on the infected machine. Once they have regainded control of the IE,
they must update with the latest definitions and rerun the programs again to
make sure all scumware has been removed.

Be aware, your Anti-Virus won't detect all types of warez, Trojans, malware,
worms, etc., and neither can other adware or spyware related programs such
as AdAware and SpyBot. They don't have the proper definitions. They must
also be run in Safe Mode with Hidden Files enabled in order to fully scan
all files. Even if you have run such programs and nothing shows up, it does
not mean your system is clean. It takes a series of programs to fully clean
your machine. *Some very aggressive and damaging variants of malware can
replicate themselves repeatedly, or mutate, if not removed properly.* A
Repair will *not* remove the infection and may make things worse.

Follow all instructions carefully.

Find out where taskdir.dll comes from.
It doesn't appear to be a normal Windows XP file.

Once you have identified its creator
you may have a better clue about how it was installed.
Then use its uninstall procedure to uninstall its whole package.

Oh. Oh... Try a search? Do you have this file as well?

http://www.2-spyware.com/file-taskdir-exe.html

(MSN search for
taskdir
)

<extract>
taskdir.exe is an executable file that is responsible for launching parasites,
loading main components of malicious programs and running a destructive
payload.
</extract>

Good luck
