I recently had the same problem I believe from reading
what you all had to say. I have IE 6, Win2k, and my
browser would not close sometimes and it would jsut beep
at me. While on another mesage board I found the following
solution. Not quite sure that it solve your problem, but I
bet that it will. Just be careful because you need to edit
the registry. I would strongly recommend backing up your
registry before editing it because it is possible to make
your computer unusable if you make a mistake. Anyway...to
fix the problem you need to delete the following registry
entry and then restart you internet explorer.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\
CurrentVersion\Explorer\Browser Helper Objects

This is a bit like a novice surgeon suggesting a leg amputation
in order to remove an ingrown toenail. It does fix the symptom
but can cause worse symptoms unnecessarily.
My usual suggestion is to assume (as you have done) that the symptom
may be due to bad BHO or spyware and *test* that assumption by
unchecking the following option in the Advanced tab.
Enable third-party browser extensions (requires restart)

Note that this is a diagnostic not a fix. If it changes your symptom
you should refine your diagnosis in this direction by re-enabling
the option and selectively disabling BHO programs or removing
spyware using tools such as BHODemon, Ad-Aware, and
SpybotSD.
