G'day,
I have been accessing one particular website on the net for months... Since
Tues evening/wed morning I have been unable to access the site. Other users
and the wesite owner state that they have had no other problems with the site.

I have run Norton anti-virus as well as ad-aware. Ad-aware detected some
spyware which I quarentined and deleted, Norton has detected nothing.

There is no response when I try to get a ping from the website on my command
screen, but in the tracer test, my computer traces right up til it hits the
other website, then it stops responding.

I have had no problems reaching any other website on the net.

I am at my wits end - Please help!

You probably have an aberrant HOSTS file. Shut down IE. Search your computer
for a hidden file called HOSTS. Rename to HOSTS.OLD. Restart IE and test.

Michelle, I have exactly the same problem. I used a
particular site for months, then now for months I've been
trying to figure out why I cannot get on the site
anymore. I've tried every suggestion offered. If you find
out the solution PLEASE post it here to my attention.
Thanks

Sandi,

I tried this and found one file - I named it to host.old - unfortuneatly I
still cano access the site...

check you security setting in Norton, it might be a firewall setting that is
stopping you view a certain page on a site.

My Norton apparently doesn't have a firewall inplace. It is simply a
anti-virus programme. I have disabled firewalls on the LAN connection this
end to no avail.
I am at a loss as what to do next.

I have attempted to disable 3rd party browsers as well - no result!

....

Sharon,

You can't say that with certainty and your Me too! is most likely just going
to contribute confusion to her thread and possibly lead to another hijacking.

You have a symptom which involves some kind of problem with rendering.
You know that you can reach your site. You have even indicated that you
can view the source of the frameset for it. We showed you that you can
extract the URL for the frames and display them separately.

Michelle's symptom so far is undiagnosed. One clue she has given
us is that she can't ping. That is ambiguous. These days we don't expect
a ping to succeed because so many domains are blocking ICMP packets
to guard against the morons who conduct their "denial of service exploits".
It could be significant if it is showing the name is not being resolved
to a correct IP address. However, she has also indicated that she
can see tracert working normally so I think that that resolves the ambiguity.

Apart from that information we have no description of what she is seeing.
It *could* be something like yours where you know that you are reaching
your site and able to view source from it. More likely though she could
be seeing an error message which would mean that her problem is
completely different from whatever it is that is causing your symptom.

If you want to add ideas to others' threads by referring to aspects
of your symptoms which seem to be related please be careful that
you make that distinction. E.g. you might have helped Michelle
by pointing out that her symptom description was so vague that
it matched yours in some respects but could she see in
View Source information which was related to the site she was
trying to get to but which wasn't being shown by the browser?
(i.e. your intent would be to help her by using details from your symptom
to extract details about hers.) That would have been useful and would
be appreciated.

Otherwise if all you are trying to do is attract attention to *your* symptom
please do it by adding new information in your own thread(s) and stop
adding confusion to others'.

Robert,

The error message I am getting in this: (copied and pasted - sorry)
The page cannot be displayed
(I have done all that ias suggested, and then some...)
***
The page you are looking for is currently unavailable. The Web site might be
experiencing technical difficulties, or you may need to adjust your browser
settings.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Please try the following:

Click the Refresh button, or try again later.

If you typed the page address in the Address bar, make sure that it is
spelled correctly.

To check your connection settings, click the Tools menu, and then click
Internet Options. On the Connections tab, click Settings. The settings should
match those provided by your local area network (LAN) administrator or
Internet service provider (ISP).
If your Network Administrator has enabled it, Microsoft Windows can examine
your network and automatically discover network connection settings.
If you would like Windows to try and discover them,
click Detect Network Settings
Some sites require 128-bit connection security. Click the Help menu and then
click About Internet Explorer to determine what strength security you have
installed.
If you are trying to reach a secure site, make sure your Security settings
can support it. Click the Tools menu, and then click Internet Options. On the
Advanced tab, scroll to the Security section and check settings for SSL 2.0,
SSL 3.0, TLS 1.0, PCT 1.0.
Click the Back button to try another link.

Cannot find server or DNS Error
Internet Explorer
**

The server's host ip number is 65.75.175.140 and the website address is
www.soulthief.biz

The tracer works until it hits the ip number of the site.

I am not very computer savvy, so I hope that this helps...

Thanks,

Michelle

For advice specific to problems with secure sites, have a look at the first
link - for general advice, have a look at the second:

The server's host ip number is 65.75.175.140 and the website address is

Good. That matches the IP address that my nslookup shows me.

The page you are looking for is currently unavailable.

I think that message could mean that the DNS lookup is working
but the request for the page using HTTP for some reason is not.
The best way to determine that would be to trace the link for at least
the HTTP packets. Alternatively we could try to simulate what IE
is doing, using a telnet client but we don't know your OS yet,
so that makes it harder to give you advice for further diagnosis.

Are you trying to use a proper full URL (e.g. with protocol prefix?)

http://www.soulthief.biz/

If that still shows in the Address bar with that error message you are
getting try pressing Ctrl-F5. (A Refresh which bypasses the TIF.)

Something else you may prefer to try is a different browser;
it may have different timing characteristics which would allow the
request to succeed (assuming that a timeout is the actual problem.)
Even if the error is not due to a timeout another browser could give
you a better interpretation of the real underlying cause. Unfortunately
I am not familiar with any other browser so I can't advise you which
one might be best for this diagnostic purpose.

Good luck

Robert

Robert,

I tried what you suggestwed regarding the "http://www.soulthief.biz/
" and the ctrl+f5... But unfortuneately it still didn't work.

I am not sure what you mean by OS... I am not very computer savvy... (sorry!)

I have attempted to make contact with the site with other browsers to no
avail.. (I think it was avante or similar)...

My ISP is saying it's my computer, but surely if I haven't changed any
settings, it couldn't be could it?

I appreciate your time in this matter.

Thanks,

Michelle

OS = Operating Software

i.e. Windows XP
Windows 95
Windows 98
Windows 3.1 !! :-) yeah right
286 or 386 or even 486 !!! LOL

That's bad luck.

Try a search?

I have attempted to make contact with the site with other browsers to no
avail.. (I think it was avante or similar)...

I don't know anything about Avante but it sounds as if it may only be
a frontend for IE. If so, that might not make any difference where you
want to test. Try Netscape instead.

My ISP is saying it's my computer, but surely if I haven't changed any
settings, it couldn't be could it?

It could be your computer if something has changed on the network
that it is intolerant of but which other people's systems can handle.

I appreciate your time in this matter.

Thanks,

Michelle

Good luck
