link I get the "Internet Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to
close. We are sorry for the inconvenience." message. Every time. I have read
a few similar problem and have run adaware and spybot. I have updated and run
virus scans. I have tryed all I can think of (which isn't all that much) I
leave it that for now and proceed with questain and answers as you'll see
fit. Thanks...Larry

Dealing with Trojans & Hijackware

A. Removing Trojans and Trojanware with Sysclean

Create a new folder named Sysclean (e.g., C:\Program files\Sysclean or just
a desktop folder). Download 'Sysclean.com' from
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp to this folder. Download the
latest 'Trend Pattern File' zip (e.g., lpt123.zip) from
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/pattern.asp and extract its contents to
the same folder; see the Readme text file for instructions.

Delete Temporary Internet Files (IE Tools>Internet Options>General)
accepting the option to delete all offline content. Reboot and delete
contents of TEMP folders and Recycle Bin.

Close all running programs including your anti-virus application, go
offline, and run Sysclean. For best results, do nothing with the machine
until the scan completes.

If the scan shows any infections in System Restore files:

(1) create a new Restore Point (Start>Programs>Accessories>System
Tools>System Restore), then

(2) delete all but the most recent Restore Point
(Start>Programs>Accessories>System Tools>Disk Cleanup>More options [tab]).

Afterwards, update your own anti-virus application and perform another full
system scan.

B. Hijackware

http://inetexplorer.mvps.org/Darnit.htm
http://www.mvps.org/sramesh2k/Malware_Defence.htm

Run the following tools in this order with nothing else running in
background:

1. CWShredder v2.0 (no updates available currently; choose Fix, not Scan)

2. Ad-Aware SE (Reconfigure per http://aumha.org/forum/viewtopic.php?t=5877;
Fix all found)

3. Spybot (RTFM; Immunize first and then scan; Generally, fix everything in
red)

Important: You must seek updates for Ad-Aware, Spybot, etc., before each and
every use, even "right out of the box". But even they can't catch
everything, 24/7.

When all else fails, HijackThis
(http://forum.aumha.org/downloads/hijackthis.zip) is the preferred tool to
use. It will help you to both identify and remove any hijackware/spyware.

So How Did I Get Infected Anyway?
http://boards.cexx.org/viewtopic.php?t=957

Hi,
This is probably being caused by a third-party program- possibly malware.

Try running CWShredder from http://www.aumha.org/downloads/cwshredder.zip
Did you run Ad-aware SE, with the lasest updates?

CWShredder, Ad-aware and Spybot can't remove everything. There's new malware
being released every day. Go to http://www.aumha.org/a/quickfix.htm
Work through the preliminary steps and post a HijackThis log to the forum at
http://forum.aumha.org/viewforum.php?f=30 for analysis.

This could also be caused by a legitimate program running in the background.
Disable ad-blockers, toolbars, other add-ons for IE, etc to see if one of
them is causing this. Take a look at any program which might be interacting
with IE.

Hope this helps,
Don

Wow...for a rookie, you've given me alot to do.

I am running windows xp with the 2nd service pack installed.

I downloaded both the trendmicro programs

I couldn't figure out how to get to the internet options. (I can't open IE
online or offline) I did go into disk cleanup and deleted everything it came
up with.

I ran sysclean (took quite awhile. It found five , but none were in the
restore points I don't think..

My virus software is Avg v7 and it was updated today. I scaned with it and
came up clean

I have adaware, spybot and spyware blaster. they are up to date and only
adaware came up with something. Its a DSO exploit with 5 entrys. It comes up
with this same entry everytime I run it. it never clears. Has been there ever
since I installed.

Thats all I did for now. System still will not let me access IE. Will try to
understand and follow thru with the rest after New Years. Thanks so for.

You can delete TIF without opening IE: Right-click on the IE desktop icon >
Properties > ... While you're in there, go to the Advanced tab, scroll down
to and disable 'Enable third-party browser extensions' and reboot. This
step *might* leave IE (somewhat) functional for you.

You may have to boot into Safe Mode to perform some of the steps:
http://service1.symantec.com/SUPPORT/tsgeninfo.nsf/docid/2001052409420406

Once you've scanned with CWShredder (v2.12), Ad-aware SE and Spybot [you can
ignore the 'DSO Exploits' Spybot comes up with], run HijackThis and post
your log to an appropriate forum.

Well.. call me lucky for trying to fix a smaller problem first or stupid for
not checking it first. Besides IE not working aol messenger was also not
working. Wasn't really worried about it, but my sister called when I got home
and wondered why I wasn't online so she could harrass me. Not wanting to mess
with it to much I just uninstalled the messenger and just before I hopped
onto Mozilla to for to aol's site to reinstall, I tried IE and it worked
fine. I had tried it when I turned computer on to see if a couple days
offline would have helped and it was still out. So thats my story. That sucky
aol world struck me from afar. Thanks for help. All was good advice, some I
was doing already, some I wasn't. All good to know. Thanks again...Larry
