This could be a mouse-related problem. Go to Control Panel --> Mouse
settings. I don't remember what tab it is, but there is a place in the
dialogue where you can adjust your double click speed. Reduce the speed,
click apply, ok, and then try starting IE. Any problems, just post them here
and I will try to help.

Always disclose your OS and maintenance level when you are
looking for help.

What happens if you Run... (e.g. press Win-R and enter:)

iexplore.exe -nohome

This is a diagnostic so your *detailed* observations are expected.
Remember, your words have to substitute for what our eyes might notice.

Normally you would see a bare IE window, e.g. one without any toolbar
customization.

Press Esc. Now what happens?

Good. That's what I wanted to show with that test. -nohome shows
that IE *is* working. The problem occurs when it tries to show your
current Home Page. (Pressing Esc stops the rendering in the -nohome
state and normally allows the user's Toolbars and current Home page
to be shown next.)

What isn't clear from your description is whether the window is closing
or just either resizing or moving on its own. E.g. is there still a taskbar
icon for the window even though you can't see it? If so, right-click on it
and look at the window's control menu. Often in these cases it turns out
that the window is a normal mode window which can be both resized and
moved.

If there is no taskbar icon check with Task Manager to see if there is
an iexplore.exe item in the Processes tab even though there are no
IE windows open.

Can you change your Home page to About:Blank and does that
make any difference to the test?

I suspect malware or bad BHO. You could try disabling it globally

<title>KB298931 - How to Disable Third-Party Tool Bands and Browser Helper Objects</title>

or selectively, e.g using XPsp2's new Add-ons Manager (Alt-T,A)

However, depending on how sophisticated it is such basic countermeasures
may be evaded. See others' posts for dealing with such problem cases.

Hi Robert

Just to clarify have used three virus checkers AVG, norton and Antivir,
checked with spybot and ad-aware. When I try to open IE the windows flashs on
the taskbar changes straight away to file download and then disappears
completely I have checked the taskmanager but nothing. about:blank makes no
difference and have tried disabling third party software in internet
settings. Unsure what you mean by bad BHO.

The possibility that occurs to me is that your home page has been set to a
file download URL, such as http://www.somefakesite.com/download_this.zip,
instead of a page, such as http://www.somefakesite.com/ . I don't know if
it's still possible but in the old days any old site could change your home
page to what it liked.

Do you have the IE icon on your desktop? If so, right-click and choose
properties - this should allow you to view your home page setting. If not,
you need to get it up there as the shortcut bar version won't work.

I'm afraid I only know how to do this in XP:

Right-click your desktop and choose Properties. Go to the Desktop tab, and
click Customize Desktop. Select Internet Explorer near the top and OK both
windows. Now you should see the IE icon.
