Hi folks,

Often (not every time), when I type a URL in the address bar, and click
"go," nothing happens.

(No "downloading http://www..." statement or green progress indicator in the
status bar...nothing at all.)

I have to click several times to get IE to go to the site. As I'm a
webdesigner & am on the net all day, this is most annoying!

I have XP home edition with SP2 and IE 6.0.2900.2180

Any ideas about how to rectify this?

Thanks so much!

When you do have this problem is it with the same site all the time or
is it random, and which site are you having this problem with.

It's not with any particular site. It happens very often with no particular
pattern. (I visit anywhere from 20-100 sites per day, and it happens more
often than not.)

I use AdAware & Spybot at least every couple days, and have excellent virus
protection.

You are using XP home, so I would assume that this is a home pc. Do
you know if you internet connection is steady throughout the day, not
dropping or losing any packets. you could try a ping -t on the site
and see if you get steady replies. What type of internet connection
are you on?

The computer is used in a home office. We have a DSL line (3Mpbs) and
haven't experienced any problems with it at all since getting it. I
upload/download a lot of files each day and there's never been any delay or
issue with that, or in viewing webpages once I get there.

It's not a question of the site I'm trying to visit being down either. Let's
say that I've been viewing the CNN.com homepage. Then I decide I want to go
to Amazon.com. If I erase the address http://www.cnn.com from the address
bar and type in Amazon.com, then click "go" it will sometimes just sit
there. I have to keep clicking "go" to finally get it to do anything. Other
times, it just as fast as can be.

Quite a puzzle, huh?

Hi,
First, clear the IE cache. IE> Tools> Internet Options> General> Delete
files (and delete offline content when that dialog pops up) It's often
recommended that the TIF folder be kept at about 50 MB (Settings.)

This might be a problem involving autocomplete and a corrupted History
folder.
Try deleting the History folder for the affected user account. A new one
will be create on restart.

The procedure [Windows XP]
Login as another user with administrator privileges, or from the machine's
default administrator account (startup in safe mode.) Make sure that you can
see hidden and system files (Folder Options> View) then delete the affected
History folder from Windows Explorer. It will be at [C:\Documents and
Settings\yourusername\Local Settings\History] Restart the computer.

OK. I did as you suggested, and reset it to 50MB (mine was being kept
somewhat lower).

This all went just fine.

But this is where I ran into trouble. When trying to delete the history
folder, I got a message,
"History is a Windows system folder and is required for Windows to run
properly. It cannot be deleted."

I did clear the history ~ but I suppose that isn't the same thing. (?)

Thanks.

Hi,
Download and run Free History Eraser from
http://smartprotector.com/eraser/free-history-eraser.htm Run it while logged
into your own user account. It can usually clear the History\index.dat file-
where autocomplete finds previously accessed URLs.
