IE Ver 6 reported as version 5 to some programs

I have an XP Pro SP2 with IE version 6 fully operational. System originally
was probably version 5.x or something, was upgraded over the years. Registry
entries show version 6, yet some web- based application installs see the
version as 5.x. and report that version 6 is required. Is there an old
version 5.x setting somewhere?

Thanks

Is this an upgrade to WinXP?
If the System came with WinXP it never had a version of IE earlier that IE6.

Hi Frank - thanks for the post. It was originally an XP Home laptop,
upgraded to XP Pro SP2. Probably about 3 years old. I may just format it
and re-install, as I note some old XP Home profiles hanging around as I look
for solutions. Thanks again.

Tell us more about the connection path, e.g., especially about "network
security" software, firewall, etc.

That symptom could be due to corruption of or interference with
the request's User-Agent string.

To see what a remote site would receive use this test site:

1) Zone Alarm Pro [Private Header Info - enabled?]: Reset "Ad Blocking" and
"Cookie Control" to "medium" "Mobile Code Control" = Off

2) Symantec (ISS\NIS) [Enable Browser Privacy - enabled] Active Content -
"Allow All Scripts To Execute". Problem: some sites cannot detect the 128

encryption Solution: Completely remove and reinstall NIS.

3) Any "ad blocking" software that blocks "http_referer" or contains entries
that are blocking access to the desired site.

4) HOSTS file that contains entries that are blocking access to the desired
site.

5) Cookie blocking software blocking "required" Cookies.

6) Pop-up blockers stripping header\url info.

7) WebWasher Standard Filter/URL Filter

8) Make sure the following Registry entry is not corrupt:

[HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Internet

Thanks to everyone for the posts. This is a small home network behind a
Linksys router. Trying to install web based Trend Micro virus checkers.
Install worked well on 3 other XP systems, but not this one. Given the old
XP Home settings I spotted, I formatted and reinstalled XP Pro and it is now
working. At one point, it even booted to XP Home after changes to some user
profiles. Guess it will remain a mystery, but I am now operational. My
sincere thanks for the posts.
