Hi

I am running IE 6 with sp2 (win xp home) 767 DDR Ram and p4/1.7

Recently (last two days) I have been unable to use IE....it is
non-responsive (despite hdd activity) and results in a message that:
"Microsoft Visual C+ runtime library" (in the top blue panel), with the
comment 'runtime error program c:\program files\internet
explorer\iexplore.exe...this application has reqeusted the runtime to
terminate it in an unusual way. Please contact the applications support team
for more information."

Does anyone have an idea how this has started occuring and how to fix?

I have reinstalled sp2 and the latest grpahics driver for my radeon graphics
card...with no success. Earlier system restore also achives nothing

Appreciate your advice...

This may be caused by spyware/malware that's gotten installed on
your system. Use Ad-Aware, MSAS and/or Spybot Search & Destroy to remove
it.

Microsoft Anti-Spyware (beta)
http://www.microsoft.com/athome/security/spyware/software/default.mspx
Ad-Aware: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
Spybot: http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html
Good sites on how to install and use Spybot -

Also download a winsock repair tool, to have just in case cleaning up
anything found breaks it -

Winsock repair tools:
LSPFix- all versions of Windows http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.zip
Winsock2 Fix- Win98, ME

LavaSoft- all versions of Windows-

More information here:

http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/ - runs a little script when loading page to
check for common parasites

If no joy, in IE go to Tools...Internet Options...Advanced tab, Browsing
section, uncheck "Enable third-party browser extensions", click Apply, click
Okay, reboot. If that solves your problem, then more troubleshooting is
needed to find out exactly which program, or Browser Helper Object (BHO) is
causing this problem. You don't want to leave it at that, as some BHOs are
useful or necessary - like Adobe Acrobat for reading .pdf files or an
essential component of Norton AV. Get BHODemon -
http://www.definitivesolutions.com/bhodemon.htm - read all about BHOs.
Disable all items, and then gradually replace one or two at a time to narrow
down the culprit.

Or if you have IE 6 SP-2 you can do this within the browser:

If all the above fails, then the problem could be something new that the
spyware cleaners above don't have in their databases yet. In that case....

Hi Jon,

Thanks for all that invaluable advice and direction. I was also getting a
low virtual memory warning prior to getting the message I mentioned earlier.
It appears your advice has had the desired affect, in the IE loads again.
Thank you.

FYI:
- I already religously use Adaware, SpyBot S&D & CW Shredder....along with
CC Cleaner & Spyware Doctor. I have had a few probs with MSAS and a NUMBER of
probs with any Nortons AV & NIS (believe me NEVER again will Symantec gear
touch my PC).
Further (FYI):
- 'http://www.doxdesk.com/parasite/' , & 'LSPFix- all versions of Windows'
....only works with IE, and my IE was not responding at all after initiating
at all.
I therefore also couldnt tweak the settings in IE you also recommended.

I however are still encountering a great delay in using IE when displaying
my 'favourites', however this has been aminor irritiation for sometime...and
the fact I can now use it again is a bonus.

I am amazed that someone who over uses (?) spyware prevention (the above in
addition to 'stinger' and AVG...was caught by what I consider to be a BHO.

BHO Demon 2.0 will again now be a part of my arsenal.

Thank you again.

regards

Lethal
