Josh

I have Windows ME and for some reason, I cannot open IE.
Each time I try, it starts to come up, but then says

"Explorer has caused an error in <unknown> Explorer will
now close. If you continue to experience problems, try
restarting your computer"

I notice that if I use CTRL+ALT+DEL, I see that Explorer
is listed as an open application. If I try to shut it
down, the entire Windows shut down menu appears. I have
tried turning it off for awhile, but IE shows up active
every time I reboot.

How do I solve this? If I can't, can I reinstall IE or
another browser. It doesn't appear anything is wrong with
my internet connection, just IE as a browser.

Thanks in advance for your help.

Explorer is one of a few crucial programs among with
System that Windows needs to be open therefore it will
always start when you reboot.

Try updating IE to IE6 if you have an older IE or
installing another copy of it from www.microsoft.com. As
far as i know, you cant uninstall IE.

when i had a simular problem, i was forced to reinstall
the OS after all other solutions failed

I'm having the same problem. I've tried to remove/reintall many times with no luck. I've been trying to resolve this for 4 days now. If you have any luck please post you solutiion. I'll do the same. Right now I'm connecting through MSN Explorer.

I actually resolved my problem by reinstalling Ad-Aware 6.0 from Lavasoft http://www.lavasoft.de/ Everything worked fine. I had removed ad-aware because I was installing Norton Internet Security 2004 thinking it had the same program. I spent many days trying to restore windows files etc... when this was all I had to do.
