unwanted items appeared on my list of favorites. I
deleted them but they appear every time I reboot. There
must be a file someplace that replaces these items. What
can I do to permantly delete these items and the file
that replaces them?

This problem is generally caused by a malware BHOs.

First, scan the system for parasites and remove them. SpyBot S&D searches
your harddisk for Spyware and Adware

&

Adaware (similar)

(Remember to perform a Webupdate to have the latest definitions installed)

This will remove malware from the PC.
