yes.once i do that, i'd like to completely delete an icon that appears in the "customize toolbar" window. HOW?

What is the icon? If it is a standard icon, the answer is probably
"No" but if it is added later, then remove it from the Registry with
Regedit.exe
It should be a subkey of this key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Extensions

....Alan

where do i type "regedit.exe"?

once i do find the non-standard icon in the subkey, do i delete only the entry with the icon name or everything in the subkey where the same icon name is located?

I cannot answer you without exact information.
Export the key to a text file and paste the contents here for a second
opinion.

i've copied and pasted the subkey for you to review. should i then delete everything in the subkey and subkey itself. i do not see that it has any purpose for me:
Key Name: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Extensions\{14051603-5C4E-11d6-916B-00E02964E8E3}

Delete the subkey you show.
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Internet
Explorer\Extensions\{14051603-5C4E-11d6-916B-00E02964E8E3}

Everything in it will delete when you remove it. No need to delete the
items in it first.

bless you for having such great insight!
