This may belong to another group but..

I am not sure if another family member might have
downloaded something over the holidays but everytime and
after a few moments of idle time my Winxp machine keeps
trying to relog into the Internet.

Any suggestions how to locate/isolate/erraticate this...I
am still stuck in 56k dialup hell and with one line if I
leave the machine unattended it gets very annoying cause I
dont realize it.

Thanks and Happy (early) New Year

Can you determine what program is trying to log on to the internet? Perhaps
a mail program checking every X amount of minutes for new messages? Or some
new software still configured to check for updates?

When the connection is being initiated, bring up Task Manager to see what
programs are listed. Look on both the Applications and Processes pages.
Perhaps one of the program names will seem "new" or "out of place." Check
that program's settings a little more closely.

Meanwhile, try Internet Options> Connections and mark the "never dial"
option. May want to check the program for adware, dialers and other
parasites too. For a quick online check visit:

Or use a program like AdAware (www.lavasoftusa.com). Download, install.
Update the program online and then run it.

In addition to Sharon's advice, read the note below:

A program or spyware might initializing the dial-up connection. SpyBot S&D searches your harddisk for Spyware and Adware http://security.kolla.de/

and Adaware (similar) http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/
* Perform a Webupdate to have the latest definitions installed *

To disable automatic dial completely (means no program can automatically dial, however you can do manually.)

1. Right click the My computer icon (Desktop), open Manage/Services and Applications/Services.
2. In the right pane scroll down to Remote Accces Auto Connection Manager and double click it.
3. Use the Startup type drop box and choose Disabled.
