When I start up IE it will try to go to my preset home
page, then the window just closes.

I have un-installed IE6 back to IE5.0 and it still does it.
I have also tried upgrading to service pack 3 and that
still did not help.

Any suggestions?

I had a similar problem when I was using a pop-up blocking
software where you specifically told it screens to block.
Somehow, my home page got into the list. If you have a
popup blocker, try turning it off and see if the problem
goes away.

How to get it out of your blocker is a whole nuther issue,
but at least you'd have found the source of your problem.

I have the same problem. If a homepage is set, IE crashes
with the "IE has encountered an error, blah blah" screen
and dies. If the homepage is blank, IE opens, but crashes
as soon as you try to load a URL. It will open local html
files fine - any network url, it dies on error mentioning
ntdll.dll

Machine is NT4, SP6a + rollup pack. Error affects IE5.5,
IE 6, IE6 SP1...nothing will make it go away. Reinstalled
service pack, closed all other programs and services, did
full scan for viruses, cleaned cache, temporary files,
registry entries, reset all IE default settings -
nothing. This is the most frustrating error I've seen in
years. But since microsoft saw fit to integrate IE for
purely anti-competitive business reasons, I can't do a
simple uninstall, clean, and reinstall to fix it. Anyone
has a clue, I'll be eternally grateful.

You may need new video drivers. Check the site for your video board
manufacturer. Meanwhile you can do the following:
1. Use the default mouse pointers.
2. Turn down your color depth. (Right click the desktop and choose
Properties | Appearance | Settings) Some people find that increasing color
depth helps.
3. Turn down your graphics hardware acceleration. (For Win 98, Start |
Settings | Control Panel | System | Performance | Graphics button) You will
see little, if any, performance degradation.
4. Turn off your desktop wallpaper.

If these make the problem go away you need new video drivers.

If you have an ATI video board, try adding these lines to System.ini

[display]
DevBMP=0 <--- That's a zero

I did remove a bunch of scumware with AdAware as you
suggested, but the problem persists.
In looking at the event viewer, it looks like the problem
is the w3svc and the w3ctrs.dll. The error message from
the event log was this:

The configuration information of the performance
library "E:\WINNT\system32\w3ctrs.dll" for the "W3SVC"
service does not match the trusted performance library
information stored in the registry. The functions in this
library will not be treated as trusted.

From Microsoft's site, it says to use Pview from the
resource kit to fix this problem.

Is there any other way to do this?

Thanks for any help...

I did check and see if my video drivers were updated, and
they were. I also put the line below in the .ini file,
and it still did not help.

Then, I re-installed IE6 and the problem is still there.
I also tried un-installing and re-installing IIS with the
same results, IE still starts up and shuts down...

Any more ideas??

Go here

and enter
w3ctrs.dll
Click More information for the versions and find out what CAB to extract it
from for your Windows version.
