A friend of mine has adopted some type of viral infection and I told him I
would try to find a fix for him. He said that when he starts Internet
Explorer, it just quits abruptly. Could someone post a general
backdoor/virus/adware procedure for cleaning this up? Thank you for your
time in advance. Oh yes, he said he bought some kind of pc mechanics
program or something like that which was suppose to get rid of it, but to no
avail. Also, he doesn't want to restore the machine and I am pretty sure it
is an xp op sys.

TIA

1) Download the following four items...

Trend Sysclean Package
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/dcs.asp

Latest Trend Pattern File.
http://www.trendmicro.com/download/pattern.asp

McAfee Stinger
http://vil.nai.com/vil/stinger/

Adaware SE (free personal version v1.05)
http://www.lavasoftusa.com/

Create a directory.
On drive "C:\"
(e.g., "c:\New Folder")
or the desktop
(e.g., "C:\Documents and Settings\lipman\Desktop\New Folder")

Download Sysclean.com and place it in that directory.
Dowload the Trend Pattern File by obtaining the ZIP file.
For example; lpt238.zip

Extract the contents of the ZIP file and place the contents in the same directory as
sysclean.com.

2) Update Adaware with the latest definitions
3) If the PC is using WinME or WinXP, disable System Restore
http://vil.nai.com/vil/SystemHelpDocs/DisableSysRestore.htm
4) Reboot your PC into Safe Mode
5) Using; Stinger, Trend Sysclean and Adaware, perform a Full Scan of the
platform and clean/delete any infectors/parasites found.
(a few cycles may be needed)
6) Restart the PC and perform a "final" Full Scan of the platform using;
Stinger, Trend Sysclean and Adaware
7) If the PC is using WinME or WinXP, Re-enable System Restore and re-apply any
System Restore preferences, (e.g. HD space to use suggested 400 ~ 600MB),
8) Reboot the PC.
9) If the PC is using WinME or WinXP, create a new Restore point

Thanks for your help David, but I have one question. How can I download
these programs if IE won't run? I mean, will I have to download it to my
machine, burn it to a cd and install it on his? I have ws-ftp on a floppy,
could I upload the required files and then ftp them to his infected machine?
I know at work he has dsl, but at home he either has dsl or dial-up, no
cable I don't think. I just tried my wireless laptop with a wireless router
in safe mode for a connection with no luck.
TIA

He indicated -- "...friend of mine has adopted some type of viral infection..." not the had
the problem.
He could easily; burn a CDROM, copy to a ZIP disk or place the utilities in instruction #1
on a USB Flash drive.

If that cleans sufficiently, then he may be able to use or more of the online scanner URLs
provided after instruction #9.

Dave

| How can he do all that if his web browser won't work?

Ok, my news server is a little slow here! I'm wondering if the infection
would stop the ws-ftp from working. Also, I'll burn Netscape to the cd and
IE and try to uninstall, re-install, etc., before using the sysclean tools.
It may be a couple of days before I can report back, but I will.

Again, thanks for your help!

If you are talking about John A. Junod's WS_FTP (IPSwitch) FTP program -- NO.

Then you have a TCP/IP problem or a WINSOCK problem.

If its a WINSOCK problem, which the removal of some malware may do, LSP-Fix can repair it.
http://www.cexx.org/lspfix.htm

If it is a TCP/IP stack problem that needs to be determined via a series of tests such as
PING, TRACERT, TELNET, etc.

Yes Kevin, you could easily; burn a CDROM, copy to a ZIP disk or place the utilities in
instruction #1
on a USB Flash drive. Basically any removable media that holds at least 25MB.

With Adaware, you can install on one PC and update it. Then you can copy to media or burn
to CDROM the directory tree Adaware was installed in. You can then use it on the affected
platform without formally installing through an installation file.

If that cleans sufficiently, then you may be able to use or more of the online scanner URLs
provided after instruction #9.

FTP and floppy disks are NOT options. I won't get into the technical aspects why.

Internet Explorer is no longer worth bothering with, as it will continually
be open to security problems that cause malfunctioning. Unless, that is,
you have upgraded to Windows XP SP2.

It's best to use Mozilla, Mozilla Firefox, K-Meleon or Opera instead.
