How can I recognize if my computer has Internet Explorer Service Pack 1
installed ??.
Does it harm if I reinstall SP1 inadvertently in a computer that already has
it??.
Thank you,
Carmen

Windows version?

IE Help > About > What version is displayed here?

What problem might you be having which you think reinstalling IE6 SP1 would
resolve?

It shows :
6.0.2800.1106
update versions SP1

The issue I'm having is that that computer, running Windows ME, after the
installation of Quickbooks and the updating of IE to version 6 ,stopped
taking automatic IP address from the DHCP server. Network access works OK. I
checked the cable, tried de-installing network card and IP protocol and
reinstalling it. Nothing works.
Internet access works fine if I assign a static IP address to this
workstation, but I would prefer to have it taking an automatic Ip address as
the remaining workstations in the network do.
I just want to make sure that IE Explorer's latest service pack is installed
before trying anything else.
Thanks,
Carmen

You have IE6 SP1 installed along with the latest Cumulative Security Update
for IE.

By crossposting this reply, I'm point you to WinME General newsgroup
(microsoft.public.windowsme.general) for further assistance with your
problem, as I don't think it has anything to do with IE.

Either access this thread & further replies to it at
http://www.microsoft.com/communitie...ult.aspx?dg=microsoft.public.windowsme.public
or make sure you crosspost all of your replies to
microsoft.public.windowsme.general (see "Advanced Options" in lower-right of
Reply window).

Carmen,

If you don't manually assign an IP address what IP address does the NIC
acquire on boot up?

Incidentally, (for Robear) this might perhaps have been better
cross-posted to microsoft.public.windowme.networking.

It takes the IP address assigned by Windows that starts with 169.
Thank you you both !!

Thanks. You haven't by any chance limited the range of addresses that can
be allocated by the DHCP server and already have that many devices
connected?

Could you please try the following. Start | Run, enter Winipcfg in the
box and click OK. Ensure that the network card involved is the one
displayed in the top drop down box. If you now click Release does it
release the IP address you allocated and now show 0.0.0.0? If you now
click Renew does it pick up an address from the DHCP server or does it
revert to a 169.254.x.x address? If the system picks up an address from
the DHCP server then the problem is possibly due to DHCP server being slow
to respond to the presence of a new network connection when the Win me
system first boots.
