I have Windows XP with all updates except SP2. I also have updated versions
of Ad-aware, Spybot, CWShredder, SpywareBlaster, and Morton Virus protection.
Two months ago my IE began giving me problems, which were, spurts of slow
and fast download times on one webpage, not loading the entire page, slow
connection to webpages, and about 25% of the time, “Page cannot be foundâ€.
If I refresh, most of the time the page will come up immediately. I have
tried several suggestions on Newsgroups but to no avail. I see that several
others have the same problem. I even did a clean restore on my hard drive
but ended up with the same problem. My cable connection works fine (I can
download a large file in a zip). I think it has to be IE. Can anyone help?
Thanks.

Hi blossomjc :-)

Try the following and see if it helps:

Download and install these two free programs:

Belarc: Free
http://www.belarc.com/free_download.html
Will tell you about your system, what updates you have or need, etc.

Process Explorer: Free
http://www.snapfiles.com/get/processexplorer.html
This little utility will tell you what all is running in the background on
your system. Take a look at what is running. If there are things that you
don't need to have when you start your machine up, then you can turn them
off.

SpyBot has a list of all the programs that are set to start running when you
start your machine. They are here: Tools>System Startup. There will be a
list in this section of all the programs that are currently set to run at
start up. You can uncheck those you don't need.

Check here to see what you really need at startup:

START-UP APPLICATIONS: DO YOU REALLY NEED ALL OF THEM?
http://www.pacs-portal.co.uk/startup_index.htm

Another check here:

Low Resources - Per Kwan-Leung Chan [MSFT]
Go to Tools at the top tool bar.
2> Then choose the "Internet Options" menu item. The Internet Options dialog

will pop up.
3> On the "General" page, click on "Delete Files...". The Delete Files
dialog pops up.
4> Check the box "Delete all offline content"
5> Click OK to close the "Delete Files" dialog
6> On the "Internet Options" dialog, click on "Delete Cookies...". The
"Delete Cookies" dialog pops up.
7> Click OK to close the "Delete Cookies" dialog
8> Now click OK to close the "Internet Options" dialog

If this does not solve your problem, you can use the "Disk Cleanup" facility
to free more space.
1> Go to
Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> System Tools -> Disk Cleanup.
2> Select the drives in turn (this is simpler then trying to figure out
which disk contains

also........you should download, install and run the following to be sure
there are no hidden warez on your system that might be draining your
resources:

HiJackThis:

Unzip the Download file in a NEW FOLDER that you can create before you start
the download.
DO NOT install in your Desktop folder.
DO NOT use any of the TEMP folders that are presently in your computer.
Double-click "HijackThis.exe" and Press "Scan".

Go to:
http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html
and download HiJackThis to the new folder. Unzip to a folder other than your
Desktop or the Temp folder, doubleclick HiJackThis.exe, and hit "Scan".

When the scan is finished, the "Scan" button will change into a "Save Log"
button. Press that, save the log some place you remember where it is.
Most of what it lists will be harmless or even required, so DO NOT fix
anything yet.

Open the copy of your log in NotePad and make a copy. Then you can go to one
of the following to post your log:

registered, go to the HiJackThis section on the forum list and click to
open. Then start a new post and post your log. The experts there will
analyze the log and report back the results. Please allow at least a few
hours or a days time for a response, depending on when you post the log

Remember, you must return to the HJT site to get your answer. It is a good
idea to click the "Notify" box so that you will get an electronic
notification by e-mail to let you know when a response has been posted.
But, you must still return to the site of your answer
