This problem keeps re-occurring: (On my Dell 4600/XP SP-2) I will have a few
IE 6 browser windows open, then usually one of them will freeze, then CPU
usage spikes to 100% - causing the computer to take several minutes to
perform the simplest operations. I usually have to (wait for) the task
manager to open so I can close out of IE – although often, the problem is
still there so I have to reboot the system. I have been trying in-vein for
months to correct this.

I have Spybot, Ad-aware, HJT, Awido, Spywareblaster, SpywareGuard, My
computer is protected by CA eTrust security suite, I have cleaned, error
detected & defragged the HD several times. I tried to update the (scripting
engine 5.6) as someone suggested - but then I was experiencing other problems
and had to use System Restore – so I’m not sure of the status of it now. Run
sfc /scannow… Deleted TIF and reduced its size to 50 MB, reduced hardware
acceleration (also my video driver is up-to-date).
Nothing works!

In addition, IE has slowed significantly. It sometimes it takes several
minutes to display web pages (it used take be no more than a few seconds).

Here are some forum links to what I have tried:
http://www.microsoft.com/windowsxp/expertz...f8-ab7c00535938
http://forums.tomcoyote.org/index.php?show...81&#entry247481

As far as I can tell, with all of the scans, cleanings, and deletions, my
machine is free of viruses and spyware & maleware. Can anyone fix this?
Where’s Bill Gates when I need him?

Hi,
These links don't work

But, If the machine was declared "clean" at tomcoyote.org I'd be looking at
the legitimate programs- especially those running in the background
providing some a real-time service. My prime suspect would be the eTrust
suite.

The offender may be another legitimate program. Disable (for diagnostic
purposes) programs such as pop-up blockers, security, toolbars and other
add-ons for IE, anti-virus, etc. Take a look at any program that might be
interfering with IE. You may have to reconfigure, reinstall, or not
reinstall, a program. Turn on the Windows Firewall (from Control Panel or
Security Center) before disabling a third-party firewall.

IE> Tools> Manage add-ons is a good place to start.

Also...
There have been reports that the latest update for Java JRE caused IE to
become very slow on some systems. Check Control Panel> Sun Java or
Add/remove programs to see if you're running JRE 5.0 V6. If the previous
version is still installed you could uninstall 5.0 V6.

Hope this helps,
Don

Don Varnau,

Sorry it has taken a while to respond… I disabled the Google toolbar.
It just occurred to me that often IE often crashes when I am running Windows
Media Player. -Can this indicate where the problem is??

I’m just downloaded Firefox. I have already used Firefox in the past but
didn’t stay with it, but now that IE is giving me problems maybe I’ll give it
a try for a while.
