IE Shuts down after message"invalid pagefault in..."

sometimes after clicking on connnect to internet IE gives
this message "Explorer caused an invalid page default in
module msvbvm60.dll at 0197:660eea45 followed by a series
of register numbers..

I am running IE version 6 on Windows 98.

Also, occassionaly the response time when I press the
start button, before the pop up menu appears in very slow.

Any ideas on what I should look for?
