IE Session Spawns Automatically

A new IE session spawns automatically on my P.C. This
happens even when I'm not running IE. The spawned IE
session then appears to send several pop up ads to my
screen. These pop ups are very slow to load and often
require several mouse clicks on the close button to end.
Besides being annoying, this also appears to be causing
serious degradation to my PC's performance. The spawned
IE session is title "- - Microsoft Internet Explorer" in
the task bar.
