IE/search engine problem

When I search something on Google or Yahoo!, I get normal results, but when I
click on the page I want to visit, it doesn't go there but rather redirects
me to an ad of some sort or other listing on a completely unrelated website.
I have run VirusScan and Ad-Aware and neither of them come up with anything,
so it must be a problem with Internet Explorer, but I have no idea how to fix
it. It just started doing this maybe a week ago, and it does not happen when
I use Netscape. Please help me. I would die if I had to use Netscape for my
everyday browsing.

Hi Brian,

Does this happen on every search result link? or only on ones that can't be
found (if a link can't be found there is a setting in IE to do a 404 search
which a hijacker(software) may have taken over)

The latest version of the Google toolbar has settings to make Google the
default search provider in IE (this includes the 404 search provider) and to
notify if any software attempts to change those settings.

The version 5 of the Yahoo toolbar has been acting flakey (see previous
posts) and lately has been packaged with ISP and OEM versions of IE, so
there is no way of telling what has come with it (consider un-installing
this toolbar)

There is an option to restore the default web settings for IE (homepage and
search) on the Programs tab of Internet Options.
And if you haven't done it already scan your 'puter for malware and viruses.

Regards.

Hi Rob and Brian

I have the same problem. When I click on a search result the first two
pages the browser goes to are closely related but incorrect pages. I can
watch the address bar changing for the redirect. After reading Rob's
response, I ran a full scan but still have the problem. Can anyone please
offer a correction? I have searched the Microsoft web site to no avail.

All suggestions warmly appreciated as this is really driving me nuts!
