IE problems after installing last patch

Ever since I installed the last patch for IE I keep getting this message res://C:\WINDOWS\System32\shdoclc.dll/dnserror.htm# and "action cancled" after staying online for around 2 hours

I'm on a dial-up so even just reconnecting doesn't work. I have to reboot my computer everytime this happens.

I want to just reformat but I need the SP1,I had it installed at the store when I bought it, first and since I only have dial-up it'd take me 10+ hours on a 56k. Yeah I know the thing says 5.5 but I always find I have to almost double that. I shouldn't really need to reformat since my computer is only 3 and a half months old.

I heard somewhere you can get the SP1 from Microsoft for free but I can't seem to find anything about it

Please help. Oh if it helps I've got a HP. I'm running XP. All critical updates are installed.
