Whenever I used to type in a non-existent web page the
default Microsoft "Page not found" page came up, asking if
any other web sites with a simliar name were what I was
looking for. Now when I do that I get a similar page but
by VeriSign, Inc. I do not know how this got on my
computer or how to get it off.

I also get random pop-ups when I am not on a web-site or
when I am on a web-site that I know for a fact does not
have pop-ups. These pop-ups are mostly pornographic in
nature so I believe they are coming from something
possibly installed on my computer.

Thank you for your time and help.

You've gotten some Spyware on your machine. Download either or both of these
programs. Then within each check for updates and install them. Then scan
your sys. and remove the spyware. I personally use both, as I seem to find
and remove more stuff that way. Also Spybot has a couple of features to help
block some from getting onto your machine.

"Arguing with anonymous strangers on the Internet is a sucker's game
because they almost always turn out to be -- or to be indistinguishable from
-- self-righteous sixteen-year-olds possessing infinite amounts of free time."
- Neil Stephenson, _Cryptonomicon_

VeriSign has started to claim all addresses that are typed incorrectly.
There are a lot of discussions on this at various news groups and
newsletters. Here is just a sample from Lockergnome Tech specialist
newsletter:
Gnomie Gerry Humphrey summed up the idiocy of VeriSign's bold attempt at
owning the Internet, drawing a healthy round of laughs from me at the same
time:
"Imagine if phone company randomly connected you to a telemarketer if you
dialed a disconnected number or... 'We're sorry. The number you dialed has
been disconnected. For only 99 cents we will connect you to one of the
numbers that we think you might have dialed. Press * when you hear the
number you thought you dialed.'"

Yours Technically,
