I have a new problem. About two or three times a day I get a notice that
there is a problem with the Internet Express and need to be shut down.
Sometimes it happens without the notice and just shuts down. When I send a
report, it says that nothing can be done about the problem at this time but
suggests downloading SP3. I am afraid to download SP3 after reading about
all the trouble it can cause. What should I do?

Well for starters, we need to know which program you're talking about.
There is no Internet Express in Windows, there is an Internet Explorer and
Outlook Express though. It would also be helpful to relay any error
messages that you see, and let us know what version of Windows you're using.
Though since you're talking about SP3, it would be safe to assume you're
using Windows XP, but then you know what they say about assuming. ;-)

My mistake, it's Internet Explorer. I have Windows xp.
I am paraphrasing, but the message says there is no way to fix the problem
now, but suggests that adding SP3 might make things more stable.

? Do you mean Internet Explorer?

Whenever any new piece of software comes out, there are always some
people who have problems with it. Because they are the most vocal
(those without problems don't complain or ask for help), it almost
invariably appears that whatever is new is ridden with problems.

Nevertheless, that's not true of SP3, and I recommend that you install
it. As usual, there are precautions that you should take to minimize
the risk of problems. Read here first:

Ken,
I was unable to access any of the prerequisites you listed. If I get another
reply after I tell them about my problem, should I download the SP3 site
they send me. Or do I still have to do all the prerequisites?
Claire

Ken,
I can't access any of the prerequisites you listed. Maybe that's part of my
problem. As an answer from them includes a chance to download it from them,
should I do that? Or is it too risky without these prerequisites? I hope I'm
making myself clear.

Are you saying that you can't get to any of those web sites?

If that's the case, almost certainly you are infected with malware.

Ken,
I was finally able to access "AumHa Forums-View Topic-Windows xp Service
Pack3 (SP3) Installation Guide".I printed it out and will study it later.
I'm not sure I will be able to follow all of the instructions.(.For
instance, I don't know how to log on as an administrator.)
If I get another message after I send in an error report and they give me a
site to download the SP3 pack, is it safe to use that? It's a helluva lot
easier than wading through all the instructions I now have.
I had a complete sweep yesterday and they only found some cookies that I
quarantined. No malware.
Thanks for your help. I really appreciate it

Ken,
I went to control panel and user accounts and it looks like I am an
administrator. But I still want to know if I get a SP3 site to download
from the error answer, can I use that? Do I make myself clear?

No, I'm confused. An error message gives you a site to download from?

What is the site's URL?

Ken,
When I send in an error message, I get back and answer saying i should
download an update. They give me a site to download. It turns out to be
an SP3 update. Should I use that? I don't know the URL.

URL is another way of saying Web site address. What exactly do you mean
by the sentence "They gave me a site to download"? A link to click on?
If so, that link is the URL. Don't click on it because it sounds too
suspicious!

You should only upgrade to SP3 when you are ready (safe and stable
system and there are a few prerequisites you need to take care of first;
when you are ready, we can help you with those). The first order of
business is to address your current problem(s).

Yes, they give me a link to click on. If it sounds suspicious, I will just
ignore it. Is it necessary to backup everything? I've never done that and I
don't know how to do it.

It sounds very suspicious. When you "send in an error message,"
normally you get no reply at all.
